Hamilton hints at Mercedes contract delay. [IMG]

A new deal between Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes could be delayed.

Earlier, team boss Toto Wolff said he hoped a contract to keep the quadruple world champion at Mercedes beyond 2018 would be agreed by Melbourne.

"We started talking about it but it's not really my priority at the moment," Hamilton said at a sponsor event, according to Spain's Diario Sport.

"I want to keep racing, so I have to renew it at some point, but I will not do it when others want me to. I'll do it when everything is ready," Hamilton added.

In the past couple of days, Wolff said Hamilton may be tempted by a move to Ferrari.

But Hamilton said "loyalty" is important to him.

"Red is my favourite colour," he is quoted by Italy's La Repubblica. "But I'm fine where I am.

"Loyalty is a value my father taught me. I've changed teams only twice in my career so I'm not the type that jumps from here to there."

However, Hamilton admits he has received offers from Maranello.

"Yes, but they cannot have all the drivers they want," he said. "And I say that as a great Ferrari fan. It's a fantastic team and I love racing against them."

It is likely that Hamilton and Wolff are merely debating the details of his new contract, including the retainer and the duration.

Hamilton said: "I do not want to retire soon or prematurely. I could race up to 40 if I wanted, but I don't think I'm going to do that.

"I could stay another year or two, but if I'm going to be as excited as I am for a new season in two years time, I cannot really guess now," he added.

Lewis will keep driving as long as he is in the dominant car; when he isn't he will retire.

pinnacle of motorsport to me has more to do with speed and such things, not technical innovation and complexity. If we really wanted the smartest to win have them implement a chessboard on that digital steering wheel of theirs ;).

Make wings smaller by a good chunk and simplify them significantly, add small venturi tunnels so high speed corners are still fast. Simplify current engine, take the complicated turbo off and put two conventional ones on, up the boost. Get rid of the hybrid system. Low end torque? Simple...anti lag. Allow for a bigger fuel tank (and impose minimum fuel limit in car during race, so they're bound to use higher power). The V6, especially if they keep the architecture of the current engine just with 2 simple turbos bolted on should hardly cost over 100 grand all in for a complete engine (and that is really a high estimate imo). Let them run 12, 13, 1400bhp. And at cheap prices, who cares if they blow an engine? Sauber wouldn't care. Let alone the top teams. Allow them to swap turbos after a weekend and use base engine for 2 or 3 weekends. Engine bill comes down to <million a year per car.

I honestly don't get why they need to make it harder than it is. Simplify, cheaper. No need for a cost cap that's impossible to police, it'll come by itself....if a team decides to spend 100 million on entertainment...let them. Years ago I said about reducing costs ''if you can't afford to compete, play somewhere else'', but it's reached a level of ridiculous now with no real reason why...what they really spend money on is ridiculously complicated engines that they can barely run to it's full potential as they need to nurse them to 7 races EACH now, which is a ridiculous target and completely goes against the main goal of this sport: RACING. Same goes for where they spend the rest of the money: Aerodynamics....which are so stupidly complicated and also goes against the main goal of Racing. Great for going fast going against the clock but that's really it.

I would eliminate wings altogether. I would want to see grip dictated by mechanics, not aerodynamics. I would also reduce the width of the tires substantially.

No he wouldn’t have, because ferrari have never wanted that jumped up berk in their car. Elton himself admitted ferrari have NEVER offered him anything, so wolfs ******** above is just media crap designed to undermine Vettel. Seb won’t care as he knows ferrari wouldn’t trust elton with a toy ferrari, let alone an f1 car, he’d destroy the team with his incessant whining and whinging

But the cars would not be the fastest anymore. An F3 car would beat it....certainly with slim tyres.

I'm glad to see we are right back where we left off at the end of the last season: Hamilton worship and Hamilton bashing

Seems there is no other topic in F1 these days.

With amateur hour statements like this -" Lewis would have won the championship with the SF70H"-- We should respond. Thats not anything but weak worthless opinion. LH is recognized here as a capable driver and in the most capable car. He should be doing well and does. Same for ANY other capable driver in the best machine.

    This exactly.

There is no evidence that Lewis is any better than Vettel, so questioning whether he would've won the title in last years Ferrari is more than fair. Presumably with Hamilton in last years Ferrari, Vettel is in last years Mercedes. My opinion is that Vettel would've won that title in that Mercedes.

Another strategy is to ignore the comment completely rather than let it suck you into another Lewis Hamilton debate that few people seem to want. That's not a mod instruction, just a friendly suggestion.

    All the best,

Not sure why you call it a 'weak worthless' opinion. It's merely an opinion, and actually one that has some merit based on the discussions that have occurred regarding last season. Is the statement 'Vettel should have won the championship with the SF70H' a weak worthless opinion? Again, given other discussions there is plenty to agree with that statement had it not been for Vettel making a couple very costly errors. So the point then becomes would Hamilton have made such errors, and if not then it is entirely credible to state that he would have won in the SF70H.

Hamilton will go down as one of the greatest of all time, he was probably the most unprivileged go cart racer as a kid, using inferior equipment. Was told "go home you don't belong here", talk about discrougment!. He conquered mental tuffness as a kid. Vettal is fast but look at his mental collapses over the years, most recently running into Lewis on purpose. I think he is better than Vettel, look at the records Lewis holds. The tipping point was the first opening race at Cota, NEW track exprience for ALL drivers. Lewis passed Vettel on the inside to take the lead toward the end of the race in a INFERIOR car!. From that day i knew Lewis was slightly better than Vettel

Who told him he didn’t belong? Wasn’t mclaren, that’s for sure, who provided money sponsorship and equipment to him, providing him with the tools he needed to be successful. Why do people make out he was some underprivileged kid from south central or something - he is the son of a £100000 a year IT consultant, hardly on welfare!

The other kids parents told him that because he did'nt "look" like them. He came from humble beginnings, dad worked multiple jobs etc, anyway i guess you have'nt read his documentary

But what about when Vettel passed Hamilton, who was battling for the championship, in the wet, at the last race of the season? Vettel was in a Toro Rosso. Hamilton was in a title winning car.

This whole ''oh he was so poor'' ****. Give it up. Vettel was not rich. Kimi didn't even have an indoor toilet!

You believe everything the British media wants you too, that’s clear. Every kid that didn’t have a millionaire dad had the same taunts as Elton, they just don’t whine about it. Racing is expensive, more and more the higher up the grades you get. I know loads of kids worse off than Elton that raced in carts and their parents worked multiple jobs, remortgaged houses and got into debt for them, most didn’t get the backing of mclaren to let them go to the highest levels unlike Elton.

I dont care about who is the best driver at all. To me there is a top 5 and then the drivers close to the top 5.

Explain me how Vettel would perform close to his best knowing all the multidimensional problem that understeering Mercedes car had relative to the suspension set up mainly ? Vettel would have had a hard time to adapt his driving style and in high speed track hes not even that good. I doubt he would have squeezed the most out of this car at least in the first half of the season. Then I am sure they will have developed the car towards his driving style.

Hamilton would have potentially according to the performance of vettel :
    - signed 5 more poles and be a lot closer to the Mercedes laptime on one lap (China, Spain, Monaco, Canada, Austria, Spa, Brazil)
    - make less mistakes and not lost crucial points.
    - won 7 more races (China, Spain, Azerbajdian, Spa, Canada, Singapore, Mexico)

A possibility of scoring a good amont of point for Hamilton to at least keep the title alive until Abu Dhabi.

Tifosi12 said - Hamilton would do another Alonso/Vettel at Ferrari: eternal 2nd - I can call that amateur hour statements too and I answered more or less in the same way !

It is an Hamilton thread with a ****ty title, bunch of racist comments turned into a so called joke. I dont think as a moderator you are doing your job actually. Dont fool yourself. I understand we are in a Ferrari forum but It is possible to like Ferrari and Hamilton at the same time ? I think nah.
