What's the original? What's the spec of the fan?

Umm, It might be a good idea to post what model/year car the application is for. Most likely it is the same transistor that is used in the Testarossa. Do a search on Testarossa blower speed transistor and see what people have used for a replacement. Look at the number on the transistor that you are replacing to see if it is the same as a TR.

Steve, Brian, thanks, it is for my '83 Mondial QV, and it is the same unit as used in the TR.

The fan motor is a Bosch 12V unit as used in many BMWs:

I could't get the original power transistor here, but to my knowledge it is similar to an NPN type 2N3055 / 10A collector current:

I don't know enough about the subject to evaluate if what I bought is a valid replacement component.
    Thanks for your advice.

2N5301 made by STM Electronics was original Blower Motor Transistor for the E23, E24,E28 BMW with that Fan Motor, it is important to have one with a minimum Ic (collector current rating) of at least 15A.

If you can get the 2N5301 which has an Ic of 30A, I would go with this:

    Type Designator: 2N5301

    Material of Transistor: Si

    Polarity: NPN

Maximum Collector Power Dissipation (Pc): 200 W

    Maximum Collector-Base Voltage |Vcb|: 40 V

    Maximum Collector-Emitter Voltage |Vce|: 40 V

    Maximum Emitter-Base Voltage |Veb|: 5 V

    Maximum Collector Current |Ic max|: 30 A

Max. Operating Junction Temperature (Tj): 200 °C

    Transition Frequency (ft): 2 MHz

Forward Current Transfer Ratio (hFE), MIN: 15

    Noise Figure, dB: -

    Package: TO3

Ciao Andre - great information, thank you! What I have at hand is close.
Could you please check the values behind yours and tell me whether it's ok to use it.
My electronics knowledge isn't profound enough to evaluate it. If not I'll try to find a 2N5301.

    Type..........2N5301-------BUX10
    Material.....Si---------------Si
    Polarity......NPN-----------NPN
    Max Pc.....200 W--------150 W
    Max Vcb....40 V-----------160 V
    Max Vce....40 V-----------125 V
    Max Veb....5 V-------------7 V
    Ic max.......30 A------------25 A
    Max. Tj......200 °C--------200 °C
    ft................2 MHz--------8MHz
    hFE MIN...15--------------10
    Package....TO3------------TO3

Many thanks and best regards from HK
    Urs

    De rien ... :)

You can sort the list by power, Ic, ...
    Quite useful.
