In the mid 2000s I worked for a company who had a snocross team sponsored by Skidoo. We would get the same sleds as the other teams but it was up to us to do clutching, jetting and suspension. The factory would send emails of ecu updates and they would program them at the track for us. We were racing against the factory sleds too and they were always just a bit better for whatever reason. We had some amateurs that we sponsored and built sleds for too. They had the same exact sleds but we didn't give them everything set up wise because they raced in a different region. There are so many things that go into making up that extra tenth of a second or saving a few ounces of weight that people don't see sometimes. Im sure the factory teams do things a bit different than the satellite teams as far as programming etc. I know that skidoo would try things for a few races or weeks and "then" send us things. It was a constant process. Test, analyze telemetry, adjust, test, analyze telemetry, adjust...... that was my favorite part.

You can bet a fix is coming. Either Mercedes will have to cough up their engine modes to their customer teams, or the order will come down that all teams are only allowed 1 or 2 engine modes the entire weekend.

The Fia did something similar a couple years ago when they mandated all customer teams must be running the same latest version and upgrades as the works teams. Works teams were bringing components for their engines only, this current issue is the same only in digital form albeit has likely an equivalent effect as solid components

I hope you're right. However Mercedes has had their qualifying mode since 2014, I do wonder if they actually take action now...

Just as an example, our merc has multiple maps available. A yellow flag fuel saving map, a couple race maps, and a "party mode" if you will... we were told we had to use only one in Daytona while they adjusted BoP. Of course they made us use the fuel saving mode so we couldn't turn the turbo up. That went away though and we could use the regular maps. AMG had a car there and ran wide open full party mode during testing and ran 5 seconds faster than the fastest lap, then pulled off and left... same exact car we have... it happens in all levels. Lol

The engine manufacture is not in charge of how big the radiators are, nor how much air flows through them.
So, yes, the chassis people are responsible for cooling. They will be given guidelines, and help, but ultimately, they are responsible.

Even if they get rid of party mode, how will they overcome Hammer mode?

He MIGHT play it safe at Bahrain...if not he will push it....could we see a blown engine coming soon?

Hamilton engine got "close" to limits in Australian GP chase.

Mercedes is confident that Lewis Hamilton's engine did not suffer any damage in his pursuit of Sebastian Vettel at the Australian Grand Prix, despite getting close to its temperature limits.

Pushing hard and running behind Vettel meant that Hamilton's engine temperatures increased, and in the end he called off the battle in a bid to ensure that there was no risk to future reliability now drivers are only allowed three engines for the whole season.

Mercedes trackside engineering director Andrew Shovlin has revealed that Hamilton's engine temperatures did get close to the limits the team had set, but says there were no indications it had exceeded them.

So Mercedes ran in Party Mode in Qualy and in the highest race mode in the race to get pole and catch Seb.. And one day when their engine explodes the fanboys cry how unfair that is [emoji6]
So you have to either play it safe and drive with the mortals or deal with the consequences.... you can not expect both highest power and best reliability! Although we know a few who do... maybe it is not such a surprise that it was Lewis' engine that blew in 2016, maybe he only "put the hammer down" a little bit too often.. ..

It must have been Lewis driving... no way that a Mercedes AMG was simply the faster car, never happens [emoji6]

Re: engine suppliers......If a team owner goes hat in hand to an engine supplier, any engine supplier, he takes what he gets or goes somewhere else. I'd think any F1 team manager or tech director would be savvy enough to know exactly what he's getting and what the vendor is keeping for itself.

Ecclestone backs calls for engine equalisation

    APRIL 4, 2018

Bernie Ecclestone has backed calls for performance to be equalised in formula one.

The former F1 supremo thinks the Mercedes-dominated 'power unit' era has been bad for the sport.

And when asked if he thinks Liberty Media has done a good job for F1 so far, he told Welt newspaper: "All I know is that Liberty Media now has the same contracts that I did.

"Not much has changed in the technical and sporting regulations. But that's surprising because the biggest problem is that we urgently need exciting races.

"I'm a big fan of Mercedes and I have great respect for their performance, but they win too much.

"If they had sold or rented their engine to a top team like Red Bull, we would have better and more exciting races and maybe other world champions.

"We would not have had this total dominance, which in my opinion would have better for Mercedes as well," Ecclestone added.

Asked what Liberty should do, Ecclestone appeared to back recent calls for engine equalisation or perhaps a banning of Mercedes' so-called 'party mode'.

"They should, or they must, achieve a certain equality of opportunity among the teams as far as the engines are concerned," he said.

"The manufacturers must understand that it's necessary to make the sport more attractive. The public must not know who wins even before the race just because one or two engines are so much better," Ecclestone added.
