A fun fact for you, the annual murder rate is now higher in London than New York.

I love the way that folk who are pro gun like to bring up every irrelevant fact drawn from anywhere else to try and shore up their argument that firearms aren't a bad thing.

Actually I think you won't find too many "cowering, muttering" folk around here... we don't need to be constantly on the defensive. Difference is we're not generally afraid of our neighbours, the police, or the government 'going bad'.

So much BS in here, I don't know where to start - besides, I'm busy (about to start work neglecting my patients). The NIH study was of 14,000 admissions across 28 hospitals - extrapolating that to come up with 18,000 deaths is gobsmacking. You need to mine the data, Mike. What is an "adverse event"? What confounding co-morbidities affected these definitions?
Oh, and the last figures I checked showed 238 gun deaths in Australia annually, but only 37 of those were homicide. The rate has been falling since about 2yrs after the buy back.

Unfortunately if you pulled the 'domestic violence' numbers out of the homicide numbers you'd probably account for the increase. And domestic violence deaths tend to be more spur of the moment than premeditated so unlikely to be affected by guns in the current environment. HOWEVER, that would change significantly if people were able to have guns in the house generally.

No it didn't have a history of abuse but Howard correctly saw the writing on the wall with Port Arthur (and what was happening elsewhere in the world) and acted decisively to make sure we didn't follow that path. The number of guns in the country isn't the issue - it's how controlled they are.

2011 figures aren't relevant as the 'culture' of mass shootings in the USA has escalated to unprecedented levels.
    Once again ......three monkeys.

Here's the end of the argument for me ........

My dad is a lunatic with a volcanic temper (ask me how I know)

He gets upset with the idiots on the road

If he had a gun handy he'd shoot them all

As it is he goes from normal (debatable)
Yep, calling the same 100 people but one has died hence the rise :p

Better than the elephant in the room...

The guns have always been here, yet the shootings are occurring more often. The availability of firearms hasn't changed, so what has?

According to SBS News, "Australia has one of the highest rates of reported sexual assault in the world, at almost 92 people per 100,000 of the population, according to the United Nations. Another survey has quoted the Australian rate at more than double the global average."

Sounds like there's an awful lot of cowering and muttering to me.

We aren't afraid of our neighbors, the police, or the government. We're just prepared in case any of them do actually go bad. Do not be deluded by your own good fortune. Violence, an unwelcome guest, can visit us at any time. I watch Australian crime documentaries, crime in Australia happens and it can be very ugly.

Australia has 5 cities with a million or more people in them. Syndey is the largest, with a population of around 5-million.

The US has 11 cities with a million or more people. New York is the largest with some 8.5-million people. We're going to have more violent crime.

Hey Bill, was it you and me that were giving the hedge fund 355 owner grief many years ago ?

He made some outrageous claims and we got banned for canning him when he reneged on a $10k wager with Louis

No, not me... I wouldn't know a hedge fund from a Privet hedge.
