Part No. 113414 l.h. conveyor

when solving starting problems on my 400i (see my thread referring to this issue) i wished to replace the conveyors from the k-jetronic airflow meter to the throttle housing because the one on the r.h. side was broken (leaking). Fortunately this one was available but the l.h. part #113414 is obviously no longer available. Now i have two reasons to think about having this part reproduced: 1. The one in the car will sooner or later fail as well. 2. The new one delivered for r.h. side is the 412 design, which is aerodynamically improved. Now, the engine has a non-symmetrical look which i don't appreciate.
I got an offer from a Swiss company doing rapid prototyping. The material will be laser sintered thermoplastic polyurethane which i consider suitable for this application. The only stumbling stone is the cost. It will be close to 2000$ for the CAD file plus nearly the same amount fore ONE finished part. This is a lot of money for the moment since it want it NOW mainly for aesthetical reasons, however if i will need it one day to replace a destroyed part, it is simply a question of getting the car back to street.
I can see two ways to reduce the cost
1. search for a supplier in a lower cost country (Any other location must be cheaper than Switzerland)
2. Have produced 5 or 6 parts simultaneously. This will cut the cost per part to halve or even less (according to my Swiss contact).

A combination of both could bring the total cost to an acceptable level.
One of the usual F-parts suppliers has informed me that he had a number of requests bevor for the same part. Now i'm asking the 400i / 412 community if someone else is in dire need and would share the production cost and if anyone knows a cheaper source any where in the world to do this type of production.

Sooner or later the official source will also run out of the r.h. conveyor #113413. If the CAD file is once available, both sides can be produced by simply mirroring the part.

 

I also looked into this because the right one on my car is from a 412 so it has the big dimple in the middle but its cost prohibitive to have them made. I think it'll take a bunch of stranded 400 owners to say enough is enough to band together and commit to having the part made. That or convert to EFI!

Yes, this is the picture for the 400i. However the one that's still available for the r.h. side is the 412 design with "the big dimple in the middle" as Newman is calling it. This one fits also the 400i and it is aerodynamically improved (you may get some fractions of HP more out of the engine). If i do consider production, i'll prefer thus the 412 design.

 

I went with the 412 versions when I replaced mine.

 

I am really surprised this is a custom Ferrari part. This FI systems was used on literally millions of cars: BMW, Volvo on and on. Has anyone searched these cars? I have not, as mine are in good condition and I clean them with Armor-all occasionally.

Possible but the configuration under the hood dictates its shape and they dont have a variety of places to to put the sensor plates on a 400 or 412. Other cars I can think of like audi and v-dub's had the sensor plates much further away from the engines and mercedes was smack in the middle of the engine!

 

I need this part as well for my 400i. Was there any progress made in recreating the piece?

 

The situation remains unchanged, in the sense that the technical solution is available but the demand for the minimum quantity required to get it commercially feasible is not achieved yet.

 

Why not use the new versions?

 

As in the part for the 412? Unfortunately it is not available either, other than for the right side. At the moment there only seems to be the option to try to repair the cracked original unit, but it is unsure if that will be a viable solution.

if/when there turns out to be enough demand for a small scale production, consider me interested

 

My understanding is that thermoplastic polyurethane parts can also be formed by silicon moulding, in which case an original part could be reproduced without involving CAD. Could this be an option?

 

Looking into the "dimple" on the air conveyor of the 412. According to the 412 engine pictures shown on ferrari.com and the drawings shown on both owner's manual versions (1986 and 1988), the 412 air conveyors had no dimple and looked very similar to that of the 400i.

Going through engine pictures on internet, if the 412 is 1985 or 1986, no dimple. If the 412 is 1988 or 1989, dimple. 1987 seems to be the change-over period from no-dimple to dimple.

My 412 (chassis 77500 from 1988) had the dimple.

I suppose these parts (113413 for R.H. and 113414 for L.H.) had the dimple change at some point in 1987 (the rest staying the same), which could potentially explain why the few such items still available as spare part are only the dimple category.

Did anybody find a solution to this dilema as the years passed?

Most of us have the non dimpled version but those have been N/A for a long time. The dimpled version is still available but only the right hand side. How did you solve this on your cars?

My right hand side is cracked so I ordered a dimpled one to get going and I will send the original off to a rubber specialist to see if they can fix it.

Or if anyone sits on a dimpled left hand side air duct I would be interested to buy that, Part # 113414

I did talk to them and they only carry the 412 RH so I ordered that. They had no clue on the LH and it has been out of stock for some time.

Way back they used to have some used parts but they ahd not had a 400 to brake for some time.

 

Any updates for this Left Side piece?

 

I looked into having new parts made (dimple-less), in order to get to a price (per pair) below 500€ would take at least 10 pairs.

 

I was going by the websites saying new and priced out. Oh well, sorry for the bad info.

ShoeGoo with a bit of black synthetic fabric allows to patch the cracks. That's a soft glue. Obviously not as good as brand new part, but better than an air-leak.

My RH conveyor starts cracking aswell. Early production 412 (dec 1985), without the dimple. Waiting for a decent replacement, is Plasti Dip a (temporary) solution?

ps: Is it a hollow rubber piece, or are there mechanical compounds inside the conveyor?

 

Its just a rubber moulded duct. Im sure there's something like plastic weld that could be used and if you do a good job it wont look like you stuck bubblegum on it.
