    btw, iconic and classic are not mutually exclusive.
    you can have cars that are both - and i would say the 308 is one of them. so is a testarossa.

    TR -- another Iconic car. Not classic.

    250 GTO. Classic
    250 Lusso. Classic
    275 GTB 4 cam long nose. Classic
    F40. Classic.

    Sorry but the 308 is not in this category. But why does that matter?

    Again it depends on your definition of what classic is. If you think it's just old, then that's classic. I'm still waiting for someone to tell me the most high produced car Ferrari has ever made in a year -- the 2009 -2017 California -- will be a classic in 20 years just because a lot of people bought them and liked them.

    Call me crazy, but I'd say the F40 is certainly EPIC, but I really wouldn't consider it "classic."

    The 308? I'd call that a classic. :)

    Look, a lot of people insist cars like Packards from the '50's, C3 Corvettes, MGBs, etc. are classics. If one defines classic as something that is now somewhat old, and you happen to like, then ANYTHING can be a classic.

    It's all opinion in the long run. So "love the one you're with" seems apropos here.

    I think an "artistic factor" also needs to be factored into the equation to finalize the definition. As others have postulated above, the XKE, '63 Corvette Split-Window, 308, etc. meet this hurdle, even though produced in numbers exceeding 10,000.

    not an 80 or newer.

    I think it boils down to semantics and definitions. Every person will have their thoughts on what a 'classic' car is. I've seen the term used on cars that are 'old' (GT4) Some people will only consider a vehicle 'classic' that is vintage and very iconic (308/TR.) Still up the ladder is the car has to be older, iconic, and very valuable (288)- At the pinnacle, it also has to be ultra rare (250 GTO)

    Unless you're thinking from an investment angle or trying to participate and align with strict auto show definitions, all that matters is what you consider it.

    For what it's worth from my armchair. I usually call any older car (around 30+ years old) a 'classic.' In the most informal sense - yes, even a 30-year-old Honda Civic. I vote the 308 is a 'classic.'

    Again I am not knocking the car but, aside from it was cheap compared to other Ferrsri’s, it was popular, it’s good looking and was on TV— what is so unique about it?

    It was not the first mid engine Ferrari. It’s was not the first V8 as the Gtb4 came out before it. It has no special racing pedigree. It was a mass produced replacement for the 246 Dino which was also a low cost mass produced car made with Fiat’s help.

    It was however the first car to be sold as a Ferrari in the USA without a V12 engine. That’s what’s unique about it. It’s badge and it was on TV. The car is fine but so where so many others.

    If you want to say it’s old therefore it’s a classic, I’ll wait for you to all tell me in 15 years about the classic Yugo you own.

    The 308 is what it is. Isn’t that enough?

    I think the 308 is a classic. It's the first car I ever wanted, the first ferrari I ever saw on TV, and the car that so many were based off of. I do get people mistaking my 8 for one now and again too. I tell them it's basically the 4 seater version. I would like to have one someday though.

    I disagree. :) Lots of cars considered classics - non Ferrari - had high production numbers. I think including that factor in the definition is a factual error.

    The '57 Chevy, the Stingray era Corvettes, the first generation Camaros and Mustangs. If any one of those can be considered a classic, then the 308 is a classic.

    BTW, my stand is ahead in the poll by nearly a 10:1 ratio.

    Now, if you want to argue that in Ferrariland we use a different definition of classic, that's a different thing, but I'd still disagree with the wisdom of that.

    In the car world, it's pretty much comes down to opinion and opinion is subjective. It's like art and music and the likes and dislikes of anyone is theirs. I'm fine with that, by the way. Back to the 308GTB/GTS . . . let's just say that it's common among Ferraris. That doesn't mean . . . . . . it ain't pretty . . . all I'm sayin' is I'm not ready . . . . . . . . . to call it a classic.

    I think the term "Classic" is completely subjective.

    To me, anything old (more than 25 years) that I enjoy now, is "Classic" to me. "Classic Rock-n-Roll" -- is the majority of what I listen to, however, to my parents (and kids) it is just noise.

    The Great Republic (ugh...I mean State) of Texas classifies any motor vehicle (wheeled) as classic, once it is more than 25 years old. They even have special plates for those cars/bikes.

    And being subjective, to me a "Bandit" T/A is a classic. However, a 1979 "Malibu Classic" is not a classic.

    To me, my 85 Mondial is classic, but not iconic. My 67 KG convertible is classic. My wife's 85 MB W123 is classic to her (and apparently to other people whom try to buy it every time we take it out).

    And yes, I think the 308 is both classic and iconic.

    Completely subjective. That's just the way I think, and I don't care what anyone else thinks. Now, you kids, get off my lawn!

    Its.... a squared off Dino with black rubber bumpers that was easier to build in mass production.

    The 348 that followed it looked nothing like it.
    The 355 that followed the 348 looked nothing like it. Many would argue the 355 might be the best looking of all the 3 series cars.
    The 360 that followed it looked more like a modernized Dino than a 308.

    So, where is this timelessness? On TV.

    Geez guys... it's a car. It's a nice car. It made Ferrari a lot of money and sent them on the path were were are today (whatever that means) by sticking on a badge (BTW-- the SAME thing Ferrari owners complained about with the California aka "Its a rebadged Maserati!")

    Enjoy it. Don't worry about if it will ever be considered one of the greats. It won't but it will still be just as loved.

    Agree the looks of the 3X8 cars are classic, but as a sports car, I'd rather have a same period 911.

    I don't care about the absolute value of the car, because that has nothing to do with its status as a classic either. Probably less to do with its status as a classic than production numbers.
