For me I truly believe the last analog Ferrari road car is the 512 BB. Last of the 12 cylinder carb cars! I have seen other threads where posters call the 355 or the 360 the last analog Ferrari. So let's have a poll and state your reasons. I wish I could include more choices but was limited. (I would have added the F50 as a choice, and maybe the 550 Maranello, the 288 GTO, and the F40. Plus the 166 MM for the old timers. )
Wow that really depends on your technical definition. I would say the Carbed 512BB but an argument could be made for the 308 carb cars as well, which are newer Analog should be no ABS, no Fuel injection, no electronic traction control or effect of the vehicle dynamics. So I would include electronic ignition but not fuel injection. If you say no electronic ignition, you have to go into the 60's or early 70's
Analogue seems to refer to the way car drives more than spec, a 997 GT3 RS 4.0, is regarded as the last anlogue machine of its ilk. Anologue means no electronic ineterference and a direct dialogue between driver and machine, more so than the cars technical spec. A miata is still considered an anologue car, or was before the eps. In other words an undiluted driving experience, a car built with the drive in mind and the comforts as secondary, a car built to feel a certain way on road rergardless of the negative effect when driving in traffic, what we used to call a living machine. I would say the 348 was the last of them as it did not have power steering, some argue for the 355 and thats valid. Up untill then each ferrari was better handlign and or faster than the one before but to drive they were lineal decendants of eachother and of the same mould. Even then I would argue that queen mother, 365GTc a 400i even a 550 were not truly anologue being too isolated. Power steering might be a disqualifier, no stick is certainly a disqualifier and if the car relied on electronics for its dynamics thats a disqualifier. I wonder if ferrari will ever again make a car thats anologue to drive.
If analog is an engineering term, then I’d go back to anything pre-ecu. as such, a 360 with its dozen or so ecu’s is not analog and it’s laughable to think of it as such. If analog pertains to driving feel, then most of those cars (except f1, abs or other driving nannies) would qualify. The question is, can the electronic nannies ever get so intuitive that a car can still feel analog?
308 FI cars. No nannies, no power assist, and the fuel injection is mechanical, not electronic. No way a 360 could be considered analog. Nannies, power assist, and EFI.
What is the specific definition of an analog vehicle? I don't know exactly but would say the last with no abs, power steering, traction control, active suspension. IMO efi is not a factor
I voted for 308/328, although 348 might be voteable depending on your definition of analog/digital. Certainly the ECU on the 348 is digital, and so is the ABS. If the question were what was the last old school car, then it is certainly the 328
This above. If it does work for you it’s not analog. I’d think maybe the 328 or 348.. not sure about the ABS
For me, such a car has to have the following attributes No computers No electronic fuel inj So I voted 308 carb but if a 512bb had no computers it would be newer
My vote was for the 355 - It was based on how the car created emotions rather than looking at it on a technical perspective Loved the fact you could order it without a stereo giving it more analog credentials Anyways have great memories of my two 355 spyders
I voted 308/328 as a category but believe some (very few) of the 1989 328s with convex wheels had the dreaded ABS (just a technicality in this poll).
348 has 2 engine ecus, electronic climate control unit, electronic ignition, abs control module. Closest car without ANY electronic aids of any sort would be a 308 carbed car still running points and condenser. Most basic car with electronics would be 308 injected car with the marelli ignition boxes. Q.V. cars upped this further with the introduction of computer controlled fuel trim by using the frequency valve and oxygen sensor readings for emissions purposes. The TR stepped it up further by having 2 emissions ecu's, and monitored sensor plate position, controlled upper and lower fuel head pressure along with also controllng a protection relay. Basicly, anything with an oxygen sensor has electronics which control fuel trim.
Lots of definitions from various sources, but Hagerty says in their "What is an analog car?" article: Any drivers’ aids beyond ABS are strictly out in an analog car. Even simple, single-point, electronic Bosch D, K and L-Jetronic injection systems are still analog whereas a Bosch Motronic system that digitally controls fuel injection and ignition is not. https://www.hagerty.com/articles-videos/articles/2016/07/01/analog-car Even though... I'm still going with the 348 because I can read the engine ECU codes myself, and troubleshoot/repair as needed.
I guess you guys don't understand what analog means. ABS is a computized method to take over from the driver's input and improve braking (aka performance) better than most drivers could do on their own in all traction conditions. On what planet does computized braking mean "analog"? The same can be said for fuel injection. If I step on the throttle of a 1978 308, a linkage moves a flap and mechanical parts in a carburetor to make the car go faster. The power of the engine is only regulated by this. A fuel injection car decides by computer exactly how much and when an electronic valve should squirt gas into the cylinder at the current temperature and various inputs of other electronic sensors while reading values of the engines output and adjusting in microseconds ways to improve equipment performance. If the 348 is "analog" exactly what part is?
