I've decided it's time to replace all the cooling system hoses as preventive maintenance. I seem to recall that there was a pre-packaged set of hoses sold by somebody but searching has not turned up anything. Am I mis-remembering?

Obviously I could go purchase hose and just make them up myself but I thought it would be more convenient if I could just buy a set if they are available.

If a set is is not available, could someone who has done this tell me what diameter (inside diameter) hose is necessary to replace all the cooling system hoses - at least two different sizes from a casual look, maybe more? Approx how much hose of each size is needed?

Yes, I guess that's the set I remember. I didn't remember it costing that much! ;) I think I'll just go buy some hose and cut to fit. Now I have to determine the sizes. Anybody know what they appropriate different diameters are? I don't want to remove the hoses to find out; I want to have the hose on hand for when I decide to do it.

The main tubes are all 40 mm with a 42.5 mm bead at each end. One and 5/8th inch hose is 41 mm and works fine, I just did my whole system with the HPS silicone. If you don't like silicone I think people use Gates green stripe. You can buy what they call "sticks" that are like 3 feet long and cut to size. AW Italian sells some 40 mm hose $25 for a four incher, you'd need 10 of them. If you decide to use silicone hose you need to buy the right clamps, can't use regular old serrated hose clamps on it. I used the HPS t-bolt clamps, way overkill I know but hey, it's a Ferrari!

Thanks K! :) I've used Gates Green stripe for marine use and it's absolutely great hose though I'd call it overkill for a car! But hey, as you said, it's a Ferrari...;)

I used silicone hose on certain marine applications but never on cooling systems, for which, in the marine world, was never particularly recommended. I'm not saying it would be bad for that purpose but it was not normally used for that. In any case, since the OEM hose has, on my 328, been fine for nearly 30 years, (and still appears OK) I don't think "better" hose matters much in the real world..many of us will probably be dead in 30 years anyway...;)

I have no idea if it is good or not good.

I invested in the David Helms hose kit and JUST had the last ones put on last month. I did all I could reach myself and let a shop I use do the rest. They told me they use silicone hoses - so that is why I was asking.

My two cents: it's going to be an easier job with silicone hose, it's much more pliable and less bulky than the standard old Gates hose and you're going to struggle with some of those connections because they are very close. You'll also need one 90 degree hose for the upper radiator inlet.

Mike - be very careful when detaching/re-attaching the hoses on the lower metal pipe just aft of the radiator. The aluminum T-connection that goes up to the heaters (pipe P/N 118636, TAV #37) can be easily dented and/or put out of round if too much pressure is applied. Whatever you do don't user a screwdriver or pliers on the hose to get it off - the aluminum WILL be distorted (been there, done that). It's not hard to get the pipe back into shape if it happens, but it's another time consuming annoyance. Lubricating the hoses with a little antifreeze when installing really helps get them over the pipes.

    Good luck,
    Vincent
