Only because Indycar has basically become a "spec" series, where everyone has to run identical cars now - It's basically Formula 2 on steroids.

Stick with F1 though because that's exactly what Liberty Media want F1 to become - A "spec" series, with Identical cars, limited budgets, limited development opportunities, simplified aero with shared parts and no development allowed, simplified power-units with shared parts and no real development allowed, and every single team in the series having the exact same chance of winning on a Sunday - All for the good of "the show"!

(Supporting Ferrari in Liberty Media's future F1 might become a bit of a problem though! ;) )

Watching amateur hour today for the Alabama Grand Prix would convince Alonso to stay in Europe.

Forgive me, but I'm sure indycar has been a spec series for a very long time? I only find it really exciting now because the aero package they've got allows great racing on street tracks....let alone proper tracks! I only mention F2 because though it's also a spec series, it has a series above it that's quicker (F1). Indycar is the top open wheel series on the other side of the pond, with indylights and so on below it.

Alonso must be really happy..he was so tired of being second and third at ferrari..pretty sure he will never be in those places again, now he can fight for 7th, 10th, maybe an ocasional fifth if the stars are aligned!!!

    Exactly.
At Ferrari, he was 2nd (a few times) with a lot of bad luck.
At McLaren, he is an occasional 5th... with a lot of luck!

Anyone here familiar with Napoleon Dynamite? I can see Alonso being like Uncle Rico for the rest of his life, desperate to relive his glory days. Which, given his role in the some of the most notable cheating scandals in F1's history seems entirely appropriate. Goodbye and good riddance.

I must say that Alonso wasn't very successful at team building during his career. More like team wrecking.

In the early and middle part of his time with ferrari, he was actually well liked and respected, it was only towards the very end of his time with us that cracks began to appear in the relationship, and ferrari were as much to blame for that as Alonso, seeing as he had to put up with our diabolical pit strategies and inability to provide him with a car capable of winning a championship. If you look at his time with us, his race craft was the best on the grid, albeit in defeat, it that was the car, he certainly outperformed the rest of the team in doing his job with 1000% efficiency.

I’d love to see him in a ferrari instead of Vettel for the next few races and see how he enjoys driving the current car now that the FIA have taken one of mercedes cheats off their car. There would be a few of his detractors eating their words here.

Very well said. In terms of race craft Vettel has zero compared to FA in terms of getting the most out of the car.
FA crushed Kimi. Crushed. The numbers over Kimi were amazing.

Vettel lol??? Bring FA back to Ferrari :).

Very very good articles, well worth reading. Echoes what a lot of people here have said about him. He is like marmite, you either love him or loathe him, but he is one of the most talented drivers on the grid. Returning him to Ferrari for next season would have, I think, been a master stroke.

Sorry Furoni, I know you don’t like the guy (understatement of the year!)

I'm kinda sad to see hiom leave, it has been very entertaining to watch him drag his ass at the back of the field.....i just hate liars and cheaters, and Alonso is both. As a driver he is however very talented, although IMO not as good as many think.

"As you make you bed, so you must lie in it"

In a nutshell, that resumes the career of Fernando Alonso.
Frustration, lack of motivation, wrong décisions have punctuated his years in F1, and completely oblitarated his undeniable talent.
If there was a wrong move to make, you could almost bet that Alonso would do it !

I cannot help thinking that had he adopted a different approach at McLaren, it could have resulted in -at least- one more title.
His reputation as a troublemaker started there, never to leave him.
Maybe Mercedes would have called him (instead of Hamilton) to spearhead their team into the hybrid era, with the result one can imagine.

The way Alonso played with the Ferrari management in his last year (should I stay or should I go?) denoted that he was completely demotivated at this point.
The dream of more titles with Ferrari didn't materialise, and Alonso vented his frustration in public, then went all political behind closed doors at the Scuderia.

It's the attraction of a £40m a year contract that brought him at McLaren, IMO, as he had burnt bridges with most teams by then.
The McLaren-Honda deal proved catastrophic and didn't enhance Alonso's stock one iota. That proved to be yet another wrong move!

At this point, Alonso had exhausted all his options, and looked for diversion outside F1.
A predictable end to what could have been a brilliant career.

2 titles and 17 years. Unequaled skill in taking a car beyond what it could deliver. No other driver does that now. None of them. Sure less titles than others. To win multiple titles is not easy. His career is not at all a disaster. He is brilliant and in many ways unmatched by most others. I would take him over Vettel or any other driver on the track currently minus Charles. So he made problems for management. That cannot be a surprise to the smart and dedicated posters on this forum.

A racer needs a capable tool and desires the challenge. Im glad FA was not happy after 5 LONG YEARS at Ferrari. They did not produce a car able to take his skill to the WDC. So he should be happy LOL???????????????

He has won LeMans and was close to the Indy 500 as well. I can see him winning it. Taking the risk while others fly off to Switzerland and the Islands. FA keeps racing. I know who I would want as my lead driver. It is certainly NOT Kimi or others LOL.

Well done Fernando. The F1 grid is much less without you amigo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Its about racing and challenge not who he upset in management at the office!
