I wouldn’t tip a mechanic...most of the mechanics I go to are the shop owners. And I avoid stealerships. If something surpassed expectations, maybe I’d bring s bottle of wine. But it doesn’t happen...if something goes beyond what was expected, I’ll probably get billed for it. So no tip necessary
Tipping is not a thing in Aus (outside of rounding up cabs, restaurant bills etc) but I used to take Christmas gifts to my guys who I'd been dealing with for over 30 years...
Thank you, the license plate frame around a few of my cars (including the 430 ) says "What a long strange trip its been". It has and as off today I've made it another year, which is about 45 more than I ever thought I would.
I do not tip .... but at Xmas I may bring him a bottle of wine. I know my service advisor for my daily drivers I do buy coffee for them and the mechanic working on the car.
I never tip a mechanic. I hate the whole concept of tipping. Why is it my job to decide how much to pay the waiter? Don't they have a manager for that? Now giving a gift (lunch, cookies, wine/beer), that's a nice gesture.
I don’t tip my mechanic, my realtor, my financial advisor, etc, etc. You tip when the person performing the service is assumed to augment their pay with tips, like a waiter. Kai
+1 (minus the insurance work, but buy them a Christmas gift) I tip my hairdresser, strippers and waiters- done!!
Agreed. I hate that when I go places they have a "tip" jar. I hate that the person handing me a cup of regular coffee thinks I should tip. About the only people that I use their services I tip is waiters/waitresses. I stay out of strip clubs, refuse to valet cars and don't use cabs etc. I should state that for good service I tip really well. I worked for tips in High School and tight wads always frustrated me. As a waiter we got paid under minimum wage back in the day. The way they thought was with tips you would make minimum wage. Maybe I am showing my age.
As a mechanic, I've never been tipped cash by a customer, and would never tip a mechanic or expect one for my services. I have been given gifts such as wine and little souvenir type things like car models and calendars, etc which is nice and much appreciated. On one occasion I did get a watch and bottle of Glenlivet 18 from a customer who's race car I maintained and provided pit support for. It wasn't a Rolex but it was nice. That said, I have been given cash bonuses by the shop owner for doing a good job, or a quick turn around for a long term customer. Whether that originated from the customer or not, I don't know. Like Mr Mayor said, I'm more concerned in return business than tips.
I agree.....my wife used to always leave a few dollars in our hotel rooms for the housekeeping. I asked her why and she said while we are out our tooth brushes are in someone else's hands. I like to take precautions that mine is not being used to clean the toilet.
I like many others take care of people with food. Especially for outstanding service. 2 stories, 1 was for Mercedes of OKC. I on my way to see my sister in an AMG when a pulley I should've replaced ages before finally fell apart. I let them know that I was in town for a couple days and needed it back to get home. They had me fixed before the end of the day, and I supplied bagels from Panera the next day. Other story is my local bike shop. They always take care of me with discounts and teaching me how to work on my on bicycle. I try to keep them fed with pizza when I come in a couple times a year.
