Did you guys see Octane’s article on David Lee’s modified Dino? Seems like a lot of fun. Hope the donor car was missing an engine anyways...

He’s going to buy up cars, modify and sell them. Should help prices of original cars going forward.

Seeing that Ferrari won’t offer a new Dino (or manual gearbox), I can see the desirability and popularity of Dinos tastefully updated and crafted only increasing. Dinos are cooler and more humble than “Ferraris”!

    This will attract new enthusiasts.

To each his own. The Dino engine is such a jewel; even though it may not make a ton of power, it's sound and character are far superior to the later 308/328 V-8s. All of this just one man's opinion.

This does open up the debate on how far would one go to have their Dino dream car? What if it were well engineered, beautifully crafted and discreet? Programmable TBI? Crankfire ignition? Real A/C? Brakes? 16” Campy or Cromo wheels? Tires? LED tail lamps? What if it were all reversible?

    One can dream!

I’m all for modern mechanicals that don’t alter the appearance or driving feel of the car. Ie, ignition. Things that make the car more reliable, safe, and useable. I personally think is blasphemy what that guy did with his 1,000,000. But it’s his car and money.

Any extra interest in the Dino is good overall. At 49 I’m as young as it gets for someone who remembers the Dino in its day.

The world is changing. Car companies are announcing they’re no longer building cars. Electrification, autonomy, ride share services are the future. Car companies are quickly falling in line. Ferrari’s are becoming more complex, larger, heavier and they no longer offer a manual gearbox. It will be like Cuba. You will be seeing certain classics for a long time and slowly we will be rebuilding and improving these cars. The cars you see will be it! We have experienced the auto industry’s heyday. This Dino is a bold statement and you will see more of this. Restomodding has been going on for a long time. If it were mine, it would be different. First off, it would be a coupe and I would limit the wheels to 16” to keep the visual balance subtle. I too love the the V6 but why not with modern seperate TBI? I’d also upgrade the gearbox. Point is, everyone’s different and we still have the freedom to build what we like, even if it’s just a color change and an upgraded ignition.

He spent all that money and left the ugly US DOT turn signals and side markers. Why?

    $150hr labor X 3000 = $450,000 + $100,000 parts and materials + $350,000 core vehicle = $900,000 + $100,000 potential profit = $1M sounds reasonable.

How many core GTS’s can you find for $350K? I bet the motor/gearbox alone costs more than $80K. Concours paintwork is at least $40K. The engineering costs needs to be amortized.......

It was a $1 million upgrade after purchasing the donor for $260k. That's why I thought it sounded high. Having said that if he is planning to sell them, it might make sense to start high.

I applaud what he did. I think it is a unique car that was tastefully done. I see no down side to it and the money doesn’t seem to be an issue for him so he can do as he pleases with it.

The Porsche 911 crowd caused this phenomenon. Singer, Magus Walker, and now others with other Marques. Some are brilliant and tasteful, others not so much. Regardless, these boutique companies are in business and people are buying their cars. Whether this will be as effective with ferrari’s has yet to be known. My personal position is ferrari need to largely be left alone for rarity reasons. If it’s visibly stock but with some reversible reliability updates I have no problem, and if the car is driven I think it’s preferred.

With Porsche, In the 60’s/early 70s you could see hot rodded and modified 356’s and 911’s. Ruf began in the 70’s creating “more Porsche” from his small village of Pfaffenhausen. He really came on the map in 1987 with the CTR Yellowbird. An original Ruf VIN number example is now trading for around $1M. In the 70’s/80’s Gary Emory created his first 356 Outlaw. In the late 90’s the RGRUPPE came along.

I don’t think the RUF VIN yellowbirds are at $1MM. Last I’ve seen for sale were in the $4-500k range for top examples not too long ago.

A period Ruf conversion Porsche VIN CTR sold at Paris RM for around $420K https://rmsothebys.com/en/auctions/PA18/Paris/lots/r0004-1989-ruf-ctr-clubsport/564645

It is currently at Ruf for a total restoration.

They only made around 30 Ruf VIN CTR’s and they usually sell very quietly.

I think they're pretty close. The "new" one supposedly costs around $800,000, so I'm assuming original copies being as rare as they are, are worth just as much.

The CTR2s are very close as well. There is one listed in Phoenix for $800,000 & one in the UK for $850,000.

New one is €760,000 ($910K) base price. All 30 are sold.

Having seen the video from the black Dino I must honestly say WOW.... If I would have the money I would like to have this Car right beside mine original one. I very much like how it was build and what the result ist. It combines the beautiful shape and Interieur with up to date Ferrari components and is really a bridge between the 60´s and 21 century.

Now if only Ferrari would build something similar, except it'll be way bigger. I was at a cars+coffee a while back looking at mine vs a California and an F12 and it was just a midget next to the modern cars.

Agree looks amazing. That workshop looks like they know what they are doing.

Also it's a shame if Outlaws are less accepted in Ferrari world when they have been part of the Porsche culture. Cars like this can be amazing if done correctly, like this one.
