Curious about what oil everyone is using in their 360? The Ferrari dealer uses Castrol Syntec 5W-50, but Ricambi recommends Pennzoil 5w40 Platinum Euro, Ferrari approved.

Both oils are the same price, so any reason I should choose one over the other?

Weird that a Ferrari dealer uses Castrol
BeIng Pennzoil (owned by Shell) the one Ferrari has a partnership with
My dealer has the hard to get Shell Ultra in big containers.
Honestly I believe any kind of top tier oil will do the work as long it is changed every year and it is the same (or similar) viscosity.

Love an oil discussion! You should post in the tech section for a deeper dive. The 50 vs. 40 is interesting. Our engines are based on a long developed platform that is different than what is in the present day cars, maybe they only stock one kind of oil? What do the 458's need? I am guessing that your car's condition, operating environment and maintenance frequency "might" be more of a guide to changing the oil spec but I would want the tech to explain this to me before switching. I use the Pennzoil 5-40 with the Ferrari approved stamp on the box when I do my own change. Here is the manual page. Two choices are given.

I think Shell/Pennzoil changed, I used to see a lot of foaming years ago with my F355 spider, I haven't seen it the past three years with the 430 Scuderia.

I think foaming might be good (supposedly because it reaches more), only problem is checking the level.
I don’t think our cars burn oil (the manual states it only to cover their asses) and as long as the foam shows on the dipstick and the oil is changed every year the level would be fine

yup, someone posted a video where a Shell engineer talked about the foaming properties being done on purpose, by design, to lubricate hard to reach places that don't have direct access to oil jets

There was a thred where a long time mercedes mechanic / shop owner evaluated all the oils over his years.
    His recommendation was
    https://www.amsoil.com/shop/by-product/motor-oil/motorcycle/15w-60-synthetic-v-twin-motorcycle-oil/?code=MSVQT-EA

He also recommended selling your new Mercedes right after the warranty expires :D

Apparently motorcycle oils still have all the nasty environmentally irresponsible metal additives that car makers are not allowed to use anymore.
Best metal moving part engines need.

On the other hand the Medical doctor that did an EXTENSIVE oil thread years ago said to use a 0W-XX oil as circulation when cold was the critical factor.
0W flows best at cold temps. Anything under warmed up engine temp is considered "cold".

So I'm still looking for the "perfect" oil.

    Chances are Amsoil has it.
    Absolutely the best.

I’ve read the opposite. Foaming means the oil is mixed with air, which doesn’t lubricate as well as just oil. On wet sump engines, designers go to great efforts to protect the oil in the pan from the spinning engine crank so as to avoid the crank foaming the oil like a blender. It’s good to hear that newer Shell oils don’t foam like they used to, but since it’s a pain to drain and refill the engine if I encounter foaming, I don’t think I will switch back to Shell just as an experiment.

Foam becomes superheated steam bubbles that explode violently and damage your bearings, not tiny scrubbing bubbles that clean better, lol.

Shell Rotella 5w40 T6 (SM multifleet). No issues, variators sound better than when I bought it. Soon to be replaced by Penzoil Platinum Euro 5w40 (Cavallino marked). Good price on Amazon.

Hi, here's one of the best articles on learning about engine oils that you can ever read, it's a bit long but every bit is very educational. Note what he says he uses in his Ferrari's:

    https://www.minimania.com/Motor_Oils_-_It_Is_So_Very_Misunderstood

Let me know what you think.

One of his main points he makes is, it's grade of oil at the engine start up that's most important.

I ended up buying the Pennzoil 5w40 from Amazon at $7.71/Quart as they have the very best price.

    Best Regards,

    johnfe

All oils flow better at higher temperatures, regardless of weight. 0W just means it flows like a 0 weight when cold (winter), but the 0W-40 means it protects like a 40 weight when warm. A straight 0 weight oil would still flow better when warm, but would be kind of thin when it did get warm.
