1986 GTB.with York compressor......The AC has never worked since i have owned the car. I pulled the compressor during my timing belt change, so I figured now was a good time to dig in and get it working. One of the maintenance records from about 10 years ago shows that car was converted to R134 and the ports on the compressor are appropriate for R134. My latest thought is to put Duracool in the system. I have read the pros and cons, so I am somewhat familiar with the stuff.

I have a new dryer, expansion valve, o-rings and compressor seals. My plan is to replace all, pressurize with nitrogen and if there are no leaks, vacuum, fill and enjoy the ice cold air. That might be an exaggeration, but any cool air air would be better than what I have now.

My question is related to the oil (not the oil in the compressor itself). I believe mineral oil would have been in the system for R12 and am I correct that to put R134 in the car, they would have had to flush the system and use ester, PAG oil or similar? When replacing the dryer, I believe I need to add oil and I want to make sure that I add the correct oil. My other thought is to flush the entire system and add ester or PAG oil. Duracool is compatible with R12 and R134 oils, but I would rather not mix and match.

Any thoughts, corrections or suggestions would be appreciated.

As you stated, when the system was converted to 134 it SHOULD have had the oil changed to a compatible oil. Sometimes, back in the day, that didn't happen. Folks bought into the "easy to convert" thing where the only thing that was done was to change the fittings and put 134 in which reduced the cooling capacity and eventually ruined the expansion valve/drier due to the incompatible oils . But what you are talking about doing will not be affected by that since you are purging the system and installing a new expansion valve and (though you didn't mention it) you need to install a new drier. PAG oil would be appropriate.

I remember the only way I could tell if my a/c was "working" was if I turned it off. It went from really hot to unbearable in the car.
