Thanks for sharing that article. I read over it and found it very enlightening. If I was doing the work myself, I’d redo the test at 40 because of curiosity, but I’m not going to pay for another test. I’m satisfied the engine is in great health.

Easy test to do with the motor out, Skipp. Could always do one cylinder for giggles. BTW - I have no reason to believe the motor has any issues.

I love this thread. Heck, my motor had 2% just after assembly with new guides and valves. Of course, it hadn't been run in yet. :)

And in reference to the thread tittle, pretty awesome.

I’m convinced most these engines would show great numbers if people would drive them often and hard ! I take mine to redline at least once on each drive.....mind you thats only about once per month.

For the record this car is a 1998 F1 Berlinetta with 18k mileage.
    The VIN is # 111024

Well that is true to a degree, Skipp. But a 98 is very different than a 95 and the issues are different. For the record, I bounce mine off the rev limiter nearly every drive :)

Is there any other way to drive the 355!! There is a large gas station next to a traffic light on my way home. I always hold the revs until people turn and look. Rarely get to 6K before the heads turn. 8k keeps them staring! The 355 is the only car I try to catch the red lights, so I can run through the gears one more time.

I may stand corrected but I seem the recall the flywheel is supposed to have a slight dish? Is my recollection off?

EDIT - just reviewed the WSM and I don't see anything about a dish so my recollection is off. Interesting to see not flatness specification is listed.

My old one was dished and not touching 50% of the clutch disk for what it’s worth. If the clutch disk is flat I would guess the flywheel must be too to get 100% traction.

There was something about it in one of the MD clutch videos showing wear. Should be flat.

I seem to recall a discussion here about it and "how it's difficult to grind due to the slight dish". Perhaps Brian Crall said something about it? Likely no easy way to search and find it.

Don't the stock flywheels have a slight dish to them from the factory? I'd be interested if I hadn't just replaced my clutch.

    Mad Dog's response:

They do, but it is almost imperceptible.

The he goes on to say, after regrind they are flat, that the initial dish effect goes away quickly as the clutch plate wears in.....

Still, I seem to remember a picture with measurements on it.

Thanks for the reading material. As FBB says, nothing wrong with parts swapping when you don’t know what you’re doing. My faith is in Hill Engineering knowing what they are doing.

He also says to blanchard grind (perhaps he means 348?) and not lathe cut. That would be a really neat trick on a 355 coz of those ears (not possible) :)
