And their solution is probably to send their kids to school with more guns.

The trouble (and it effects your country too) is that we labor under the delusion that the only reason homicidal maniacs murder is because the particular device or object they would like to use to murder people happens to be attainable, and if we but take away that object, the homicidal maniac will get bored, go home, and go on to lead a normal and productive life.

Attainability is probably the key word, if you are suffering depression or a mental illness and your parents ( in the latest case) have a gun, its all to easy.
Even criminals here for break ins and hold ups use syringes, hammers and knives and often get chased off.
Where I live you could break into 500 or more houses and not find a gun!!!!
I know a lot of people and none of them own a gun, every day people just don't have guns here, we just don't need them.
I haven't been to the US so I can't speak for your country but I believe this scenario would be different over there.
In Australia if you aren't a member of a gun club or have affiliations with criminals you don't have access to guns.

The why do we keep harping on the weapon, and not the fact that so many are willing to take weeks, even months, to plan out mass murder, then execute said plan?

We can argue the "need" for firearms as a means of self defense (one in six women in Australia are the victim of sexual assault), but that's not really germane to the discussion.

The availability of the weapon is not the issue. Australia has little violent crime (at the moment) because it has a smaller number of people (per capita) desiring to commit violent crime. If someone breaks into you home tonight with the purpose of murdering you (not threatening you in hopes that you'll capitulate) with a baseball bat, you and your family will likely be dead by morning. Australia doesn't have a bunch of murdering bastards just hanging around thinking, "damn, I really wish I had a gun, then I could finally go on that murdering spree," nor does the U.S. have a bunch of murdering bastards who are currently going out and murdering people, who will suddenly stop doing so simply because the availability of firearms somehow disappears. The problem isn't the weapons, it's the people--the violent criminals--willing and desirous of murder and violent crime.

America has a violent criminal problem.

America has a problem with its youth, creating an unreasonable number of children willing to plan out the mass murder of their fellow students, then execute said plan. And they don't need firearms to do that. There are myriad other ways--many of which would be much more effective--to accomplish the same goal, and the materials for such actions are readily available, if not already contained within the average home.

Please, Mr. Government, Please keep me safe from myself. Please, I have no self control. Please, I'm only human, so I need a conglomerate of humans to tell me what to do.

Yeah, it's snarky, but no more snarky than your amazingly articulate post.

You're arguing with the wrong crowd, we don't need guns unless we're farmers, police, defense force, criminals or in gun clubs (this being the same as criminals :p )

You guys have ruined your country and your kids are LITERALLY in the firing line ...... great legacy you've created, you should be very proud of the stupidity and fear that has been created

And the guns thread on this site is the most disgusting thread that should be deleted as it's just symptomatic of the problem in the US

Institutionalized Hoplophobia. In the Twentieth Century alone, over 200-million people were murdered by their own governments. May you never be made to eat Mr. Santayana's words...

And you think having a couple of guns could save you from the same thing in your country??? lol A few guns against the might of a trained and armed army?? Hilarious.

By the way, whilst you're right about kids planning these shootings, which will only get worse with the copy cat syndrome, at least you have a chance of running away from a knife, baseball bat, machete etc. so you can't say that guns are part of the issue.

have you ever considered that perhaps the CULTURE of "I need a gun to shoot him before he hurts me" could be part of what's led to your violent crime problem?

Actually, I do agree that problem isn't the tool - it is the people BUT the tool has created the people you now have.

Australians just don't NEED guns that's why there is no push to allow them.

Two reasons why this is an important distinction:

    1) Making the violent criminal only slightly less deadly does nothing to address the real problem.

    2) It ignores the more than 2-million defensive uses of firearms that occur yearly in the US.
