Hi, just thought I'd mention my solution to passing Ont, Canada Emissions! I recently (2016) purchased a Euro 348 (privately) from another in On. resident. He had previously failed the Emissions test... numerous times! Upon selling, he had this PASS statement, and the #'s looked really good... his answer, replaced Cats. So, here I am in 2018, needing an Emissions test to get another 2 years registration, with a total of 5Kms driven, and the 1st Test fails miserably!
When I purchased the 348, the PO claimed Cats were new, although the look of the 'Fabspeed Cats' suggested certainly more 6000 Kms than the PO had done in the 6 years previous... MY BAD, SHOULD HAVE HAD THE CAR TESTED AGAIN DURING ITS PPI! Obviously, the Cats were the old ones, replaced after a successful test(2016), and probably sold to recover lost $$!!! All that to say, should you purchase a 348(or any other) have the PPI include a sniffer test!
Fortunately, I had purchased some 'test' pipes a year ago, and working with a parts dealer, was able to find an alternative, to the very expensive FABSPEED CATS,($3K. CAN)! I purchased 2 of the Walker 93251 Cat Convertors (Ultra) and cut/fitted to my test pipes. Passed the test beyond belief...!!! I discovered afterwards, that I could have saved the test pipes and just utilized the dead Fabspeed Cats. I did find out through Internet searches that Fabspeed guarantees their products, just not their Cats... for $3K, suck it up!!!
All this to say, there are dishonest sellers out there, make sure you cover every base. The PO has lied about this vehicle, on several fronts being uncovered going forward.... just wish I had an hour with him now...!
The PAIN... thinking these were new Cats and failing, I went to a Dyno specialist to verify if indeed, this engine was running Rich! The Dyno guy came up with the stats that this engine is clean...in fact, suggesting, he trys to tune for the related air/fuel mixture. Anyway, all that said, the PO scammed me again, and for that, I am wiser! I won't share all the 'dirty laundry', just pissed at another episode!

Join the club; the more money the more dishonest some people are. I had three broken spring perches, amongst other things that should have come up in the PPI and MOT (similar to your test) but didn't for "some reason".

Fortunately for us there are a lot of really good people in this community.

A 348 in Ottawa!! In my day it was a very very rare sight to see a Ferrari in Ottawa. How times have changed! I'd love to take one up into the hills on a quiet morning ;)

Actually... there are quite a few 348s in Ottawa...

When I have to go through this BS, I put old cats on the car knowing it will fail... go fail the test and because replacement Ferrari cats a crazy expensive, I get a conditional pass if I spend the minimum on repairs (~400$)... since the repair facility has no clue about working on a Ferrari, I tell them not to touch my car and basically gift them the 400$... then I go home, put the test pipes back on and get to drive my car for the next two years

Your issues with the PO notwithstanding, here are 3 things any 348 owner should do before an emissions test:

    1. Check for any vacuum leaks.
    2. Inflate the rear tires to 40 psi. Spec is 38; a few pounds over spec creates less resistance on the rollers, which means the engine works a little easier and has fewer emissions. Just a few pounds, as over 51 psi gets into bursting territory.
    3. Heat soak the engine bay. This is the big one. Let the car idle for 30 minutes or more before it goes on the rollers. The difference is huge - two years ago I had a smog test on a cold engine; it barely passed. Last week I heat soaked the engine and passed emissions with flying colors. I idled it for almost an hour before the test and my emissions were at about 1% of the allowed limits. And I have to pass California emissions, the strictest on the planet.

Now get out to Calabogie and give your 348 a work out!

I bought my '95 355 from NY that didn't require emissions testing so the car had straight pipes. She failed miserably her first emissions test in NJ. Bought VERY reasonable pro-speed cats (Now have a new company name) that were offered on this site. Perfect fit. She sailed through emissions. NJ now no longer requires emissions testing on pre '96 cars. woo hoo!

though I should mention I had a PPO by an Ferrari Dealer and the car sailed through. Told me I didn't need a leak down test she was solid. She was shipped to my home and I swear, as she rolled off the trailer & started her up, every Lamp lit up. CELs, Temps, ABS, Shocks. it's like she was a different car. It takes time to get everything all sorted out.

Hey, thanks guys... I just had to vent! Emission tests for 90’s cars are pretty simple here in Ontario, just a Sniffer test, no rollers! Calabogie... yes, just not at the moment. Love this car, lots of feedback! Anyway, just thought I would post my experience as $300.Can for some new, decent Cats worked well for me. At least I can put them back in for future tests and know they will Pass!
