I’m not sure that I buy that. Let’s put aside the issue of gang shootings, and agree that frankly they can keep killing each other and people like you and me couldn’t care less. The fact is that even taking gangs out of the equation, the US has a ludicrously high level of gun violence. A large proportion of which is committed with guns that were legally owned, if not - obviously - legally used. Surely even you can see that if you make it harder to get hold of these weapons there will be less incidences of this kind? BTW, introducing bombs etc into the argument is utterly ridiculous, unless the average house has a few 250 pounders sitting in dads bedside drawer...
The trouble is in teasing out the data. I'll give you one example of how corrupted it all is, many states report the unintended victims of drive by shootings as "accidental gun deaths." Seriously. Here's another; a man who has been arrested for assault and shoplifting, but he is allowed to plea down to only the shoplifting charge. Now we have a known violent criminal who can still legally own a firearm. Worse, when he finally murders someone, the statistics say he has no history of violence because his record shows his convictions are for things like shoplifting. That's one of the reasons why the gang murder rate is so contested. When you only count gang member on gang member for some sort of gang purpose, the number is small (and states like that). But if a gang member is robing a store to get money for himself (and thus the gang--everything is taxed), isn't that still gang related? In the statistics, it isn't. Interestingly, the cities with the worst murder rates also have the highest gang populations. Correlation or causation? Good question. Any device useful for defense will be useful for offense, so of course. But that also has to be weighed against the 2-million defensive firearms uses each year (this amounts to up to 2,575 lives protected for every life lost to a gun. Source: Targeting Guns). Take out the gang related and "furthering a criminal enterprise" related homicides and that ratio grows even larger in the favor of the legally armed. Couple that with the 200-million in the Twentieth Century alone who were murdered by their own governments, and you understand the reasons why the US enshrines, "it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security," in the First and Second Amendments to the US Constitution. You're missing the point. Since it is very common for these maniacs who commit the mass murder of their fellow students to build bombs, then, if the mere presence of guns in society is the real issue, anyplace without guns should still have kids doing all the other parts of planning and carrying out the mass murder of their fellow students, including (and more likely, since they don't have guns, relying on) the building of bombs. If, in places like Australia, kids aren't planning and attempting to execute the mass murder of their fellow students, the problem is something else that is happening in the US but not in places like Australia.
You talk a lot, but most of it is rubbish. Just the typical gun lobbyist using irrational reasoning to justify their ideals.
Which I note, despite being asked a number of times, you still haven't shown any real data to back up. The NRA website doesn't count. Anyway, we know all about statistics, right?
