RBR still overreacting

I'm so confused, what are you on about? The biggest "*****" out there is Sergio Sweater doing the annoying "we will quit" play, yet again.

Ricciardo is perhaps the only driver with a personality, I didn't realize anyone disliked him, what makes you think he's on Elton's level?

 

I don't dislike him, but for f-sake... the guy walks on water. I think the "25% down on power" is a bit overstated. If that were the case Seb and Lewis would have had plenty of time to catch him. I know, I know... it was like he was on Apollo 13 but c'mon. Everything he does is just flat out, balls to the wall AMAZING and everyone wets themselves at anything he does. Most of his wins have come from attrition. He's a great driver, no doubt, but the hype gets old. Perez's podiums have been a far greater achievement yet get very little attention.

 

I like Ricciardo but agree others hype him too much. I may have missed it but I don't think he does that himself, my impression is that it is moreniyhrrs all over how amazing he is.

 

I don't know if the claim to be running "25% down on power" comes from Ricciardo himself. I read that Horner said that to the press, because the telemetry he was monitoring during the race was showing that. Ricciardo himself didn't know exactly what was going on with his PU, but was adapting quite well to the circumstances and drove his car accordingly.
I think you are slightly unfair with Ricciardo. In the first year of the hybrid era, he adapted quickly to the different driving required (lift and coast, energy saving mode, etc...) and was the only one who scored 3 wins against the dominant Mercedes (if I recall), outclassing clearly his 4-time WDC team mate Vettel - to my surprise. As an apart, I think that pushed the German to seek new pasture, rather than being humiliated.
Then, in the last 3 years, Ricciardo managed to add a few wins on a car with maybe the best chassis, but down on power and often unreliable compared to Ferrari, and of course Mercedes. I didn't made up the unreliability, it was plain to see. I think Ricciardo needs some slack. He is a great guy, the victory at Monaco was great too and they didn't go over the top celebrating it either.

 

I guess I just don't see it as some epic win. They clearly had a car in a class by itself... and good for Ric and RBR after that idiocy with pit stop cost him the race.But anyway, there were no daunting moves, no expert defense of the lead, nothing. Just some management of some issue which clearly didn't impact him any considerable way as he drove around the circuit unchallenged. Nice win? Sure. Winning Monaco is always a great one to add to your resume, but the way so many are just falling over themselves is just a little much and it always seems that way no matter what.

It's true that everybody looked like driving on tip-toes and there wasn't any challenge among the first 5 at least. Vettel soon gave up any idea of attacking Ricciardo after a few laps, when he found himself out of DRS range and Hamilton appeared to be in some damage limitation since the Merc chassis does suit Monaco with its long wheelbase.
But that's the nature of this hybrid formula that everybody seems to drive saving something; saving fuel, saving tyres, saving engines, etc... Sustained attacks, and epic chases we used to see in the past are gone.
This compounded with the narrow confines of the track made most drivers look very cautious last Sunday.
Monaco is considered as a showcase for F1, but the race was boring, I agree.
I am ashamed to admit that I kept on watching expecting some fireworks from Max as he was scything through the field, but even him was on his best behaviour.

 

Ricciardo must be the only nice guy at Red Bull. About his win at Monaco, well, the track suited his car and from then on, it was a matter or survival (hey, do you get it, Max?).

 

How much Ricciardo was down is anyones guess. IIRC during the race Brundle said he was 13Km down in top speed....not a huge amount, definitely not enough for the Ferrari/Merc to eat him up. As far as I could work out the MGU was not supplying power to gears 7 and 8 (8th not used here), so he was basically revving higher than optimal in 6th.

Based on this, the only thing I have real issue with is how someone compared it to Schumacher getting 2nd in Spain 1995....surely that was quite a bit more difficult, given that he only had one gear he could use, still had to pit (thus drive away in 5th!) and overtaking being a lot easier back then and especially on that track.


Either way, it shouldn't take away from Ricciardo's victory. He was going to win anyways, he was fstest in every single session, obliterated the rest in quali with 2 superb laps....I imagine the stress from driving a wonky car was far larger than having to defend ''what if it conks out in 6th as well'' must've been on his mind a lot!).

I'm no fan of Helmut or Mateschtz. Horner on the other hand I find excellent, youngest team manager still I believe (has been for years), build the team from the ground up to championship challengers in a very short time (yes with money, but the teams he was up against certainly aren't short of any money either) and 2 very difficult characters to deal with (one of them being a ruthless billionaire who threatens to pull out every so often, and the other is Helmut who shoots of his mouth quite often).

Ricciardo I can't understand why anyone would dislike him. Verstappen I get why people dislike him. To me he seems like a nice guy, arrogant sure, but he's not making any excuses for it which I like, unlike certain other F1 characters who say one thing then the PR stuff comes out....

 

Everyone was managing their rubber, especially after Bottas came out on the harder compound and would not need to pit again. However, I do think Vettel was poised to make a move after the VSC, at least until Vandoorne came out of the pit and blocked him allowing Ricci to get too far away.

 

That's quite a bit, especially using one foot (or even two).

 

Unfortunately I was not able to see the race, only the highlights....But as far as I understood Ricci got away with his issues because it was Monaco where one can not overtake anyway and also because all cars struggled with the tyres. As one could not change strategy easily in Monaco without loosing places they were stick to that one-stopper and had to nurse the tyres. With better tyres maybe the following cars would have been able to put more pressure on Ricci pushing him or his car into a DNF. So he "only" had to nurse the car and not really defend at the same time.
But I can imagine what Ricci thought the moment he realized that again in Monaco something is going wrong...

Max was turned down by Mensa ,but managed to get into the 'Mental ' group

 

He managed a car down on power and made the best of the cards handed to him. I win and a good one at that. They are celebrating as they because the car was in a position to possibly lose. They held on for quite a few laps. Thats work. We would think Ferrari would be as happy. Any team would be. This is news to you>? LOL.
