Yea but McLaren and RBR have two totally different philosophies and management styles. In racing it's about how partners mesh just as much as it is the actual tech itself. We'll see how it works out now that its official.

Not if the boss of Renault is to be believed, who rules out « a big name » (and a big check…): Renault must win with a “responsible” budget http://www.nextgen-auto.com/Renault-won-t-sign-big-name-driver-Ghosn,127884.html Which is contradictory with the rumor that is making a lot of noise these days in Italy especially: http://www.nextgen-auto.com/Newey-not-denying-Renault-switch-rumours,127892.html Rgds
Both Honda and Torro Rossa said at the beginning of the season that Honda was now "free" to do things McLaren said it could not accept this would help their reliability. And, if you look at the results this year, both power and reliability are way up over last year. This is a great move for Honda and RB. RB gets first the class treatment they weren't getting at Renault and Honda has everything to prove. They will work their tails off for RB to get a second chance. And, with new engine regs coming, everyone is going to be scrambling again. That puts everyone on the same footing.
Honda says it will not identify Red Bull or Toro Rosso as its works Formula 1 squad in 2019 because it "doesn't make sense" to assign labels to its teams. Red Bull will split with long-time supplier Renault at the end of the current season to join its junior team Toro Rosso in running Honda engines from 2019. The expectation was that Red Bull would assume works team status, like McLaren had during its three years with Honda. But McLaren had exclusive use of Honda's engine, and the Japanese manufacturer has made it clear it wants to present equal status as it prepares to supply a second customer in F1 for the first time since 2008. "From a manufacturer's point of view it doesn't make sense to identify either team as either works or customer, as current regulations oblige us to supply the same power unit to all our teams," said Honda's motorsport boss Masashi Yamamoto. https://www.autosport.com/f1/news/136853/honda-red-bull-wont-have-works-team-label

Can't say I see it that way! I get the feeling Renault were convinced Red Bull were going to sign with Honda anyway, and simply got sick and tired of being messed around by them, with the constant: "We're still carrying out evaluations on which supplier to go with" routine, and so forced their hand. TBH, after the very public, constant slating Renault took from Red Bull a couple of years ago, to this day I'm amazed they didn't simply tell Red Bull to go :censored: themselves, and walk out on them! - I would have!
Definitely. Renault knew the deal was done. The only cards they still held were the timing. RBR wanted to make the announcement at their home track. Renault forced them to reveal 'early.'
Seems to me Renault was pushing RB to make a decision hoping the Honda engine would develop a problem. The longer the decision the easier it would be to evaluate the jump. I wonder what McLaren is thinking. But I think this helps McLaren as they jump up the totem pole. In fact Mac may be celebrating.
Nah... There was very little chance that RBR would stick with Renault... that has been clear for a long time. Renault knew this and started punking RBR. We have a new engine for Canada, but you might not get it...we MUST know now so you cannot make the announcement at home...etc.
Yep, now they’ll be the second best Renault team! They’ve been the worst chassis for whatever engine they’re running for the last 10 years now?
But they did, Phil, they did indeed! Remember the summer of 2015? Marko said very unpleasant things about Renault in public, believing he had a Mercedes engine deal already sealed, only to learn later that the board at Mercedes (which has a business cooperation agreement with Renault and even some small cross-sharing of shares) said "no way, because we will not agree to an agreement providing our engines to a partner that would badmouth us in public at the first opportunity". So Marko was left high and dry, having already jumped out of the plane to discover that he forgot his parachute; then he came back to Renault, who said politely "no way, these guys has badmouthed us, so they can look elsewhere; as for us: never again". Then pressure was applied on Renault by the FIA, which was afraid Red Bull might be left without an engine, and Renault accepted to provide an engine to R.B again only if rebranded (hence the "TAG Heuer" brand) and after public apologies from Marko; AND at full cost. That summer Marko really demonstrated how dumb he can be: he ousted his engine partner, only to find his team without any engine at all in the end, and had to come back to him again, getting the same engine but at a much higher price. Frankly, I find it difficult sometimes to understand why Mateschitz is keeping that guy... Rgds
Maybe you will have noticed that I do not post in the race threads anymore, but still in the "silly season" and "politics" threads from time to time... Rgds
Not ten years: the 2010, 2011 and 2012 cars were competitive: the 2012 one was pretty decent, Lewis won four races (out of my memory?) with it. So, six seasons: starting with 2013 and up to, and including 2018. Rgds
Fair enough, forgot Mercedes took so long to get the Brawn winning again. Anyway, easy to imagine McLaren behind Renault for the foreseeable future. Good job Zak and Eric!
As the racing gets more dull year after year, it's the politics and the gossips that keep me interested in F1. Crazy, no ? It's like watching a soap opera.
Red Bull have become experts as this !!! Just ask Renault if they considered having a meaningful relationship with RD, in spite of several WDC and WCC titles and many wins together. Nope. When Red Bull wins, the engine supplier hardly gets a mention, but if they lose (God forbid) it gets crucified !!!
I can well believe that !!! Newey is the pragmatic guy, Matschecitz and Marko are the caustic pair always outspoken, and Horner tries to be the referee between the parties. The Red Bull management can't be easy to handle!
