So after another spirited drive during a shift from 1st to 2nd, I feel the stick shift go Jell-O on me. I look down and what do I see? The stick shifter snap in two! I didn't even know it happens! Reading the forums, I see it is actually quite common for the 3x8s.

I ordered a replacement from Germany and will replace the whole silver box thing soon. If anybody has tips on replacing the gear shifter housing, let me know!

    Cheers

I've rebuilt the whole shifter assembly on a 3.2, and the main assembly looks mostly the same as yours. Easy peasy.

Think of driving as a fine art. Only use the amount of pressure on the controls required. No more.

There's several videos out there on youtube of complete gear-shift assembly restoration.

I've seen at least one for the Modial, and one for the 3x8s.

It's getting late here, so I'm off to bed. I'll try to locate them tomorrow.

That's nuts Paul, sorry to hear.

Maybe it was the car getting back at you because it heard about your things you don't like about the Mondial thread? Cars can be like women sometimes. :p

oh wow Paul! Never seen or hear either! Metal fatigue I guess. The metal from Italy was the worst in Europe in those times. Any pics by any chance?

I redid the whole shift shaft in the past. I guess most of the things of the console are the same for a T. However you have two rods under it instead of one and the shift housing is different. hope it helps

I'm genuinely curious to see how this looks. Is the shift literally snapped in half (and now a short shift?) or did it break further down in in a joint making it un-drivable?

Thanks for all the kind words!!! Here is a picture of the crazy thing. I really appreciate all the suggestions. It sounds like it happens quite a bit based on these other threads:

In this thread, you'll hear no less than 7 instances (twice to one guy!) of it happening to different people (crazy)

Found instructions for the 348 here

    Thanks alexion for your reply.

I was able to manipulate it and stuck it second and limped my way back home. Not a fun ride back, thankfully it was not too far (15 minutes)

Thanks Wade! I ordered a new housing ($500) that should arrive this week, hopefully, my buddy's lift will be available and we'll swap the thing out. My car has over 60K miles and 30 years, so that's a lot of usage/time. Perhaps metal fatigue. The replacement has 20K miles on her, so hopefully at least another 40K miles of not having to worry about the thing?

    :)

Interesting, and adding to spicedriver's comment, I remember drag racing American V8s, banging shifts as they say. On the other hand, Ferrari and finesse go together. So maybe the PO of your car thought they were driving a Mustang. ;)

    hahahaha.

Just an FYI, all the instances I've seen were from 348/355 - so not sure if it's just a weak point for 't' variants.

    Cheers

It's certainly interesting. I wonder if environmental conditions come into play as much as overall design/casting of the metal itself.

It's a real Ferrari part. That means it must be worth HUGE bucks!!!!!

I'm looking forward to seeing it on EBAY.

Are you and Mitchell going to fix it? If so, can I come hang out and watch?

As Mitchell will attest, I am not mechanically inclined, but I love watching the work being done by those who are

Do you have to go in from the bottom? I have a pretty nasty high frequency vibration in my shifter at higher rpms. I have seen posts about it in 348s and 355s. Apparently there is a bushing in there that wears. I want to tackle it eventually. Please let me know how all that stuff goes together when you do this.

Looks like the worst possible spot to break. Were you able to shift it with your finger tips somehow and drive home?
