the leather on my passenger airbag cover is bubbling. Is it one piece or can it be removed separate from the device.?If its just a cover panel,i would like to remove it and fix it.

The exact same thing started happening to mine a few months ago. Any feedback on the best way of correcting this would be appreciated

Thanks for that! How (easily) does it come off?

    Is that a flip-up panel?

It appears to be hinged on one side of what is showing

The leather is glued to a plastic panel which is pop riveted to the body of the airbag unit.
I for one wouldn't be drilling them out, but you shouldn't need to. You should be able to just peel the leather off and re-glue new foam and leather.

I'm still a little confused. How did you get the photo you posted? Is that the unit itself removed from the car or can the cover be flipped down in the car as it does appear to be hinged at the bottom in the photo? Could you give a step by step process of how you got to the point you show in the photo?

    That is my exact question.

I can see how the fabric is attached.

I do not understand how you got to that point just as KC360FL stated.

I am interested to know how you removed the assembly.

Does it drop down through after the glove box is removed?

I went through my Service Manual Volume 2 and found in the M section and discovered that the glove box has to be removed, there are seven (7) screws underneath, and then the unit apparently pushes out towards the passenger compartment

Sorry for any confusion, the whole airbag unit is removed in that shot.
As noted above, you remove the glove compartment exactly as stated, then unscrew 4 phillips screws and make sure you either note or tape the packing washers. Then the airbag unit pulls forward away from the dash.

    Thanks for the clarification.

On a safety note, did you shut the battery switch 1st, and if so how long did you wait before removing the unit?

Yep, absolutely. I have completely removed my dash to address leather stretching, so it wasn't intentionally left for a period of time. I would suggest if you simply switched the battery cut-off and then tried to apply accessories power, any residual power would quickly drain.

I had been talking with a group in Texas who makes airbag shut off switches.

Their advice was to turn battery switch off and wait 15-20 minutes before touching the air bags.

    Your suggestion is also good.
