Does anyone else here follow the CWS? My Gators are the defending champs, but it is very tough to repeat, with 8 very good teams in the tournament.

College baseball teams should exclusively use wooden bats. Especially, the Division 1-A schools. I (believe) MLB offered to pay the bills for wooden bats.

    agree.

given the number if D1 schools with forestry programs and/or large tracts of timberland, I would think this would be a great marketing exercise too. "bats sourced from sustainable organic fair trade student-managed timberlands" or some such nonsense.

At least when I was still playing, there was a real concern there wasn't enough viable wood in the world to support college ball going wood.

I played in D1 in the late 70s and early 80s just as metal bats were coming out. I remember going into a huge closet, when I was a feshaman, that was filled with wood bats and the equipment manager told me to pick 3. I loved it, but in my sophomore year we were given the choice of 1 metal bat, that I still have today and were told that's it. The league I play in now is all wood bat and that's the way the game is supposed to be played.

I can't stand the sound of metal bats. Wooden bats 100%.

Well dang, I should have looked at this forum earlier, I am in Omaha,
with two extra bedrooms, you coulda come up and stayed here...
I used to photograph the CWS, all thru the 80's, stopped in about '91,
have only been to a handful of games as a spectator, went to just one
this year, the one where all 3 Arkansas players let the foul ball drop...

I hate to tell you this, but that is what they said about hockey sticks, too...
Some day, probably not in our lifetimes, MLB will be using all carbon-fiber bats..

I can't imagine MLB doing that. It would make it impossible to compare stats from different eras.

Interesting how the power in college baseball always comes from the south and the west. Although Big 10 teams have won the CWS, that was many years ago when college baseball was much less important.

Of course the increased opportunities for playing time in the south must make some difference, but that doesn't explain teams like Oregon State and Washington making the tournament.

Great point. My son went to University of Miami and he could watch them play 12 months a year. I played up north and we couldn't even get outside until mid March. Huge advantage to warm weather schools.
