Removing 360 steering column cover

The airbag is in the steering wheel - you won't deploy it.

The upper and lower shell are held together by tabs on each side. You need to separate those.

 

It’s a ***** of a job. You also have to remove a bolt under the steering column to drop it and get more clearance. But even then it’s real tight to get it out.

 

As Dave said, just be mindful about the barbed tabs.
Else, I found it to be rather straightforward.
Just take your time and it should not be difficult.
Going back in is a breeze.

 

There is one extra screw.... I forget where but I almost broke when taking off

 

If memory serves me right, there are 4 screws. I'll need to look when I'm at the shop.

 

I have replace my sticky wheel cover against a carbon part some month ago. Having a 360 F1 i have to remove 5 screws in total. 3 are holding the lower unit and tight it against the steering column/shifting unit and 2 more tight the upper unit with the lower together. Additional plastics clips on the left/right of the 2 shells.

IIRC one of the Macarbon, Remove Sticky .... Companys have a short instruction manual which helps me alot. You need to adjust the steering around to get access to the screws!

I dont have to remove my steering and i havent touch the airbag for this job.

IRRC There are actually 5 screws (2 front and 2 rear plus one at the very back and center) plus a tab on the left and right. There is a strap that limits the column tilt function that needs to be loosened in order to allow the column to drop far enough to get the top cover off, the strap is a solid bar of aluminum on the drivers side of the column with two 8mm bolts, remove the front and loosen the rear. I also loosened the bolts for the lower leather dash trim to allow that to drop a bit further for more clearance but it may be possible without that step. My cluster was not removed. My car is a manual. Hope this helps. Jay.

This is the correct way to do it or you take the risk of breaking the posts that the bolts go thru. Aside from the screws at the bottom and the tabs on the side the bolt mentioned should be removed to lower the column for clearance. Theres a thread with pics on here somewhere

 

We repair those posts often. Often they are missing so we have machined blanks on hand to do the repair.
