To get back to the question, I was told by an engineer that it's not so much a question of "going bang" as it is one of excessive wear on such areas as the cylinder walls. He explained that the wear factor increases by the square of engine speed (how he knew that I have no idea). Since the power starts to drop after 6000 RPM, there would seem to be no reason to rev higher anyway, except to listen to that lovely song. I'm no engineer, so don't take my word for anything other than what it is.

That is just about the HP my 330 engine registered after rebuild.
With regard to redlines, some of the limitation can be due to the accessories. I would bet my power steering and A/C pump would not have the same limit as the bare engine. That being said, I have buzzed my engine past 7000 momentarily a couple of times. No problems yet.

    Cheers
    Warren
