https://bringatrailer.com/listing/ferrari-348-355-challenge-wheels-by-speedline/ I've been wanting to get a set just for track use.
Not a fair question because I like everything on bring a trailer. Be careful. The rear wheels are easily bent and most of the sets Ive seen are bent. If the seller posted a video spinning the wheels on a balance machine that would be good.
The listing says that the wheels were "refinished by a previous owner". Sorry, but that looks like a rattle can job to me.
Whatever the bid, add $800-$1000 to properly refinish them. See various Bradan threads for what goes into refinishing these wheels correctly. The Challenge wheels really weren't meant to live off of tracks or smooth streets. I had a set on my former 348 Challenge. I always had problems with one of the rear wheels (repaired crack, couldn't stay true). Fwiw, I'd rather purchase a set from a well-known and trusted FChatter - even if the cost were higher - than a set on BaT (showing signs of corrosion no less). And I agree with Wade. They look like they were refinished with a can of Krylon - and I'm not trying to knock Krylon. But if they're not cracked, and are true, could wind up being a deal at the right price (if the corrosion isn't pervasive).
I've had several already good sets redone at Ferrari of Houston, who know what they're doing with these magnesium wheels, at a cost of 300$ per wheel. So as Malex said, expect to pay atleast a grand on top of sale price. A lot of these challenge wheels have taken a beating over the years and I'd highly recommend getting them tested by a highly qualified place like FOH. If you get these for less the 3k and they're not cracked that's a good deal.
Only on FChat should I find this sort of cautionary wisdom, I think. Thanks all – it's just too easy to hit the BaT crack pipe. Rule of thumb to add a refinishing grand on top of winning bid seems essential.
I suspect Seattle has the competency - just haven't started the search. Sent from my Pixel using Tapatalk
If you dont want the truth dont ask the question. Every single point I read here is exactly what I have seen.
I do like the look - but which Cinel wheel? I don't see one on their site that's a broad 5-spoke like Speedline.
I agree. Its not an exact match. I would be surprised if Speedline allows the wheels to be reproduced by Cinel without Speedline's affiliation and legal authority.
So, $4400, +shipping from FL, Plus $250 buyers premium, +800-1200 to refinish. I have had Ferrari magnesium wheels refinished (properly) that have bee improperly painted in the past (bubbling). No idea of cracks in the barrel, or lug areas as well as bends in the barrel. Seems astronomical to me.
Agreed. I was thinking ~$2500 was the right price (maybe push to $3k . . . maybe). Like you said, plus $250 to BaT, plus ~$300 or so to ship if not local pickup, plus ~$1000 to refinish and you'd be all in at around $4k, which seems to be around the price that most sets of Challenge wheels change hands. And the $4k assumes nothing else is wrong. Well, I guess they're worth exactly what someone was willing to pay. And to that particular buyer, they're worth around $6k refinished.
