The GTO has a smooth aluminium shield underneath the fuel tank to protect it from stones etc which also acts as a spoiler which aids air flow to keep the rear on the ground. An early ground effect car.

Ok, I've seen many of these up close, and it's not easy to pick a favorite, or "the best"...we all have our reasons & opinions, but just for a little fun here is my pick....it is the only unrestored GTO, 3647 GT.

Full disclosure, my friend owns it, so I might be a little biased :D But it does have race history, and it's unrestored.... and still being raced!

    According to Trevor Yale Ryan,

''This Ferrari 250 GTO is the GT class winner at the 1963 Le Mans, bested only by a prototype Ferrari 250P, making it perhaps the most desirable example in existence.''

    Unfortunately i don't know the s/n.

Gorgeous. Lose the massive garish numbers and it would be perfect.

I wonder how owners who possess more than one 250 GTO would answer the question. Did they buy the best GTO the first time or did the second GTO represent an upgraded specification?

I've no idea really but the goal with Lord Bamford, who lives in Britain, where cars drive on the left side of the road, may have been to eventually end up with both a RHD S1 bodied GTO and a RHD S2 bodied GTO of which there is only one, having sold LHD S1 3527, LHD S2 bodied 3413 and LHD S1 3909, which he achieved with RHD S2 bodied 4399 and RHD S1 3767 when they became available.

Also I don't think any GTO is considered to have a better specification than another one, even though the S2 bodied cars were claimed at the time to be more aerodynamic, and lower with wider wheels and tyres, than the less rare but more sought after, and more recognisable as a GTO S1 version.

Mind you, some S1 GTOs have cabin air vents in the sail panel, but does that make it an upgraded higher spec car? I don't think so.
