I’m a new Ferrari owner. (A little less than a year) 2007 F430 with only 7000 miles. I have a couple of transmission questions I hope you all can help me with. My first question is it normal for one to hear clanging noise when you shift from reverse to 1st? Not really loud just lite clank. Can almost feel it more than hear it. Also is it better, worse or no difference to drive the F1 transmission in auto as opposed to manually shifting it? I’m a gentle driver not a speed freak so I don’t drive it hard.

    A certain clank is nornal

Listen to this video about 40 sec in

In terms in auto vs manual ..auto will eat up the clutch faster

Things when driving to save clutch wear... Avoid uphill reverse ... Try to accelerate quicker then slower to fully engage clutch ... Put car in neutral when coming to a stop .this seems to summarize the other threads about this subject

Michael: Welcome to Ferrarichat! I hope you are enjoying your car.

If you go over to the 360/430 forum and/or run a quick search, you will find many threads on how best to use your F1 transmission. So, for example, putting the car in neutral as you come to a stop is a rather controversial point (I never do it with my 360). No need to rehash all the arguments pro and con here -- you can find them all with a quick search!

This is a great community. I hope you enjoy it, and I hope you enjoy your car!

    Aloha,
    Bob

Dominick is spot on. I had my 430 for a little over a year and the clutch wore approximately 1% over that time doing the exact things Dominick mentions. Don't be afraid to shift at higher RPM's if you are doing some spirited driving. You'll be fine.
