Starts and idles at high rpm on choke. Will not idle on its own. Sputters and dies. I can hear the fuel pump clicking non stop. No change in tone once pressure is built.

This is normal when cold, but most don't use the choke and just use the acc. pedal to squirt a little extra fuel when cold to keep it running until it warms up a little. if you mean it won't warm idle (with no choke) = that's a problem ;)

You must have a replacement clicking diaphragm-style fuel pump (e.g., Facet). The stock fuel pump is a rotary vane type so it's more of a continuous hum/buzz. But it's normal to always hear the fual pump running -- fuel is continuously recirculated back to the tank so the fuel flow (thru the pump) is never stopped (even when there is no fuel flow into the carbs)..

Was it: 1) OK at warm idle, and then suddenly wasn't OK, or 2) it hasn't been right at warm idle since the last time someone (mis)tweaked it?

For #1 there's some hope that it could be something in the ignition (like losing a bank), but for #2 you are back to square one. Confirm the ignition system is working on both banks, and tweak up the carbs - Birdman has written a nice tutorial. Good Hunting!

It began acting up the last time I drove it. Coming out of first gear it would sputter until I got rolling. Now it’s not ok at warm idle at all. It just quits.

Maybe try to clean the jets? Just take of the airfilter box and both the idle jets and mains are easy to just screw out and clean.

When cold, run it for a minute then check each cylinder's exhaust temp (IR temp scanner or spit on your finger and quick touch.) If one bank is cooler, probably ignition, if one or two cylinders, perhaps a blocked carb? If no difference perhaps a blocked fuel filter of bad pump (it will still click if valves not opening or closing), or an ignition issue on both banks. It might be worth checking the cam timing as it may have slipped.

Turned out the plugs were bad. Runs great now.
