    Hi guys,

I want to have a wheel paint shop modify regular wheels into to 'Diamond cut look' wheels - has anyone does this? Do you have any advice on what to ask for so it comes out right? From what I can tell at looking at the diamond cut wheels,

I was thinking of requesting the following to get it to come out correct:

    1) Paint wheel Overall darker tone. Paint wheel darker
    2) Exception: Leave the top surfaces lighter silver

Any other criteria you guys would suggest?

You could end up making a meaningful investment while achieving a less than satisfying result (or worse). I'd buy a new or mint condition used set and sell what's on the car now to recoup some of the cost.

I don't think you will like what you get if you follow those instructions.
In my opinion, either paint the whole wheel into a darker shade (I painted mine into black matte shade and it came out beautiful in my opinion), or buy a new/used set.

You didn't say which car or which regular rim you are thinking of.

Not all rim designs can be diamond cut. Diamond cutting requires the profile of the spokes to offer sufficient surface for the lathe cutter to expose metal on when the rim is spun on the lathe. The cutter also has to be able to smoothly follow the profile of the spokes so if the spokes are very thin or have abrupt profiles, it won't work. Some rims may also exhibit inconsistent (blotchy) coloration in the alloy which would be exposed when "diamond cut" and this is not related to the quality of the alloy as it can happen to even the best rims. An experienced rim refinisher will know. I spoke with an friendly expert at the factory that supplied the metal used to make my rims.

FWIW, I diamond cut my new HRE rims because I could not find a factory finish and colour that would match my car. I bought the premium monoblock rims with the least expensive finish and then stripped, repainted, diamond cut them to my specifications. The procedure was inexpensive and worked out really well.
