Jim, I vaguely remember something about that but I can't com up with an answer right now except that they tweeked the wing maybe. I do remember that the horizontal stab continued to move up and aft as the design was progressing.

I know the problem, if it even existed, disappeared on the -200 (which made up the bulk of 727 production) because of the increased distance between the wing and the tail & engines.

I wonder if there was an AOA limit on take off or climb out. This thread is opening up a lot of memories that haven't been addressed in many years.I did a lot of work on that airplane and trained about 2000 people; factory, off hour training, schools, and public venues in a couple of years before the 727 was built and flown. I have forgotten a lot of stuff, I guess.

I was thinking about the title of this thread, "The dawn of The Jet Age' and I was lucky enough to have seen the dawn of commercial aviation in this country. It started in 1926, the year of my birth, and was still in the beginning stages when I was three years old and able to memorize the events taking place. Thirty years later I took part in the dawn of the jet age. Saw man on the moon, too.

Bob, I sent the book out to you this morning and they said about 5 to 7 days for delivery. Might want to get ready for shipping costs... they were quoted initially being pretty high, and that's just for a book that'll fit into a tackle box. Yours might really be expensive to ship.

I've got a really start checking these texts before I go and send them. They are voice to text and often use the wrong grammatical word. Sometimes I catch them sometimes I just don't, my apologies. For example I think I'm my last text I had Plaines when I really meant planes! I'm sure everybody read through that but gosh it look terrible

By the way Bob I just looked up that book of yours and Amazon, quite nice. Can't wait to read it. I think I was asking you before about Crystal sets, I used to mess with them when I was a kid. I think that was the predecessor to my eventually getting into ham radio

That really says something about Boeing aircraft Bob. Even with as old as they are and you know the beating that the sum of those airplanes take those things are anything but in Plum anymore, and yet a little trim and voila! And yet the Boeing 707 still lives on through its kc-135 counterpart. Tell me how many DC 8s are flying in the United States right now?

Thank you for the nice comments re the book. I wonder how much better it would have done if I had the marketing that professionals have.

Thanks muchly. I enjoy it very much because it is a lot better than sitting with a cat and just thinking about it. It is good to have friends to chat with in this forum because they have a lot of interesting experiences and knowledge. Very enriching every day.

Any chance of a sequel, Bob? You could emulate Ernie Gann and write "Bob Parks' Flying Circus"! :D

I could never equate any written thing of mine with that of Gann but he could never equate any of his paintings with my stuff. Not that my art was as great as his writing, it was an obsession of Ernie's to be a visual artist as well as a great writer. We painted many nights together in his studio and we had some interesting sessions. He was and always will be a great author.
I am working on another book now about what America used to be and not so much on the flying parts of my life. I have such wonderful memories of the freedoms and uncluttered life that was possible in the 30's and 40's. Also the responsibilities that we carried up to and into the war. No i phone, no TV games, cell phones. Riding bikes all overt the place, kick the can, sledding in the snow, reading, swimming across the Potomac at 8 years of age, sailing in the Gulf Of Mexico, and a lot of other things that are no longer a part of the young lives now. Not a great writing subject but an observation that I feel that I want to express.

Well, I can assure that it will be a best seller, on this forum at least. Even at my younger age I can think of a great many things I remember that don't exist anymore: dial telephones, pay telephones, typewriters, black-&-white TVs, CRT-type TVs, console TVs and radios, wired remote controls, vacuum-tube stereo gear, 8-track tapes, 78-RPM and 45-RPM records, VHS decks, special-delivery stamps, subway tokens, automat restaurants, AM-only car radios with piano-key tuning, horn rings in the middle of the steering wheel, front vent windows, auto air conditioners that were under-dash add-ons; the list goes on and on!

Thanks, you have n idea of what I'm thinking.Doctors made house calls, one traveling on the train or airplane dressed nicer, train travel was a comfortable and well served way to take a trip, teenagers were discreet in their conduct and polite to the elderly, they made statements with their mouth instead of their hair or clothes, there were gas station attendants, if you were insolent or broke the rules in school, you paid for it, if you broke the rules in the house you paid for it, kids were outside playing games and getting exercise most of the time , kids and even grown ups could write cursive. If you didn't pass all the exams, you didn't graduate. Many other things come to mind but it can be written in an interesting way instead of my listing things, I think.

I think fondly on being a kid in the 70's. I think I'm part of the last generation to grow up with what you listed. Except maybe teenagers weren't so descreet... I look forward to your new book!

Thanks, what I mentioned were minor observations. We used to go to the theaters in Washington to see fledgling comedians perform between the featured movies, one that I remembered from 1938 was a guy named Red Skelton. Then the radio had Will Rogers and local radio in Washington, D.C. had a personality named Arthur Godfrey on WMAL. Wiley Post and the Winnie Mea was a famous duo until Post and Rogers died in Alaska. Dirigibles road around sometimes.

Our family doctor in Puerto Rico back in the '60s made house calls, and I remember gas station attendants checking your oil. One other job that has nearly disappeared? Babysitters! Nowadays people insist on dragging their kids everywhere they go, and in restaurants the resulting noises can be painful! How can one enjoy one's meal if you are constantly having to take care of a bawling child? I'll give $500 to the first popularly-priced restaurant chain that bans children under 5. (I know my money is safe, because no one will do that.) And you're right about dress on planes and trains - if you watch the video above or any of the type, that'll immediately be apparent!

I'm going to kill spellcheck! I typed "roamed around". I just recalled that Arthur Godfrey flew a T-Craft on floats from the Potomac. My typo, " Winnie Mae" not Mea. Too early in the morning today.

To get this thread back on track, here's the competition - A United promo film of similar vintage on the DC-8. Those on-board meals sure look good, and to think, they even had a lounge in coach class.

Right on jim. I remember an NWA flight from SEA to Philadelphia when I was on a Boeing assignment. We had steak, a vegetable, wine, and mashed potatoes for lunch in coach. And I had a flight from SEA to Dallas in 1952 on a DC-7 where I spent some delightful time in the aft lounge with one of the "stews" that played the ukulele . Try to find that now. On present airliners anything aft is a cramped and smelly toilet.

An interesting minor digression-- an air museum near me got the last existing (or so they claim) Convair 880 fuselage, and they're going to set it up as a static display that you can go into and walk around in. Should be pretty cool, if they get it up here.
