Today that would be a terrible trade. A beautiful 308 for the unloved MP4/12c. No thanks.

I didnt buy my 308 because I wanted a fast car.

In fact I don't give a damn how slow it is.

I would love to own a 488, though.

Unfortunately, I dont think that level of Ferrari is really in the cards for me. I think just the cost of ownership would be brutal.

If I were filthy rich, it would be different....

Here in Australia Ferrari offer a 7 years free service/ maintenance program.
I actually thought that was a world wide incentive?
Certainly makes ownership a lot more affordable.

I meant just in general. I pretty much keep a car forever and once that 7 year deal is up and the years pass and I keep racking up the miles....
(my 308 is pushing 120,000 miles at the moment)

the 458's and 488's have not so far shown to be un reliable, but when a component fails - replacement is usually the remedy. which means $$$$$$$$

Friend's carbon ceramic brakes cracked on him doing track days at Road Atlanta... $24K! comes with new pads. I don't seen there being many work around for any of these cars... and Ferrari are very guarded on allowing software to be given to independent shops & when they do its big$$$$.

BUT if you get the chance to drive one - they are heads and shoulders better than the 430 / 360 ... by a huge margin. the 488 sounds just as good as the 458 from inside. The other thing that I just don't get is that 458's and 488's will suffer from sticky gooey switches at some point ... Ferrari continue to use the same coatings ... which is stupid.

my ideal garage would be my 328 next to a red / black 458 with dark gold wheels... or Blue with Gray / red seats.

Looks great but as others stated, we still can work on our 3x8s, parts may not be as much, love the gated shifter and as my wife says: I am stuck in the 80s.
For speed yes I would trade but besides the track where can you really drive it? And it is too low for my driveway without reengineering the driveway so it will not scrape.
Besides the Magnum PI reboot will be on soon [emoji851][emoji267][emoji531][emoji484][emoji475]‍♀️[emoji907][emoji291]

As a new 488 spider owner, I must say , I'm very surprised at all the negative comments about it.
I realize the question is only hypothetical, but still notice the negative comments. So, I'll throw in my 2 cents, and say that I love my new 488,
and wouldn't trade it in for anything. My car gets more compliments on the street than anything else , and is very capable of holding her own on the track as well. When Ferrari comes out with something better looking, I'll still keep my 488, and just add that new one to my collection.

I can see how our comments can be interpreted as negative, but, at least for me, and I expect for many, it is a matter of priority.

I can’t add more cars to my garage. In the past, I have rented space across town, swapping cars as needed, and really didn’t like it. Aside the financial considerations, I just don’t have room to add another horse to the stable. Yeah, we could move houses, but we kinda like the joint we got.

For better or for worse, driving a 308 is the same rolling carnival as driving a 488. The general public draws no difference.

It comes down to what one enjoys about the car hobby. There is a whole cadre of 3x8 owners I’ve met through my 308 who have become my dear friends. They are all a bunch of crazy hack mechanics like myself who enjoy the problem solving and fixing that the 3x8 allows. We communicate a lot. The 3x8's simple nature is charming. It feels like I’ve lived on airplanes and attended meetings as a career. Going to the garage and getting grease under my fingernails solving mechanical problems is such therapy.

Because a 488 is so sophisticated, I would have to abandon the problem solving element of the car hobby. Sure, I would still greatly enjoy driving a 488 and taking it to Cars & Coffee type social events, but my true love is the mechanical stuff. I am not alone in this sentiment.

I love the 355GTS. To me, it's the perfect size combined with stellar looks and a perfectly matched powerplant.

But I've said this before: I could have afforded to buy a 355, but I don't think I could afford to own one. The 488 (and 458) is like that for me - they are supermodels who only eat at Michelin Star restaurants... despite the fact that I can cook a great meal. The day I got a $15k bill for brake parts (or whatever) would be the day before I posted a 488 For Sale, Needs Brakes ad on Fchat.

And besides my lack of an SD3 and lift in my garage, I'm like Tommy. I wanted a 308 since 1977 - not just any Ferrari, the one I own.

no 488 ever saw Enzo Ferrari: all my cars came out from factory when he was there. If the 488 chief designer says he has been inspired by 308 shape, means the 308 is better looking than the 488.

I basically traded my 328 for my 612. Sold the 328 and bought the 612 for the same price. Love the classic look of the 328 but my wife and daughter love the 612.

I agree with Brian. there is nothing wrong with a 488. Heck they are stunning cars and when the times comes for me to buy another Ferrari, a 458/488 will be the one.
I posed the initial question to really see if owners passion for their 3x8 could be tempted with an equivient brand new version of their car.
Not for profit or to on sell later but to see if they loved the experience of living and driving their cars so much that if a sweet, juicy carrot was dangled in front of them, would they bite.
So far the general consensus is no.

    I haven’t driven a 488, only a 458.

I’d consider the swap if Ferrari offered a real manual gearbox.

But since they don’t, no. I prefer my slow 308.

I want to add that I like very much new Ferrari: Portofino and Pista are (in my opinion) very good looking and fantatic cars. This said, I know what many can think: "you have a 308 because you cannot afford a 488 Pista". The only true part of the period is that I cannot afford a Pista, but If I could, I would buy (in order) a Dino 206 GT, a Dino 246 GTS, a 275 GT4 and a 250 Lusso (and maybe a 410 SA too). No new cars. Those are the cars I prefer, the only ones I think that can be even better looking than a 308 and built during Enzo Ferrari age.

So I don't want to trade one of my cars with a 488, but if someone here wants to trade a 275 GTB4 for one, I'm here… :D

I had a test drive in the new Portofino....no to that one.
But the 488 were about 320K used.

When I mentioned to my son, he said the 458 was more desirable from his perspective..

I want to go no newer than the 6 speed MT, so my "yes" would be for a nicely optioned 430 coupe!!
As the values trend today, that's almost a doable plan!

    Interesting question!
It's really a question of Tech Support, how many old carbed techs are left out there?

I have and had several 3x8 family cars. The real trouble is when your K-jetronik fuel injection starts working bad: It's a nightmare, while the carbs are much easier to fix, at least here in Italy as the Weber DCNF are very well known here

I would trade in a heartbeat.

The 488 is stunning. I love my 308 and I know this is the 308 section but c'mon, seriously? How about a Pista? Would you trade for that?

Even less chance. I wouldn't buy a Pista if I had the money...the hood is just a terrible design, appearance-wise. I'd buy something else.
