Looking to buy a low priced Ferrari

    Hey guys,
    I am looking for a low priced Ferrari for my dad. He has always wanted a "fun car" to keep in the garage and drive on weekends, and now he is finally looking to buy. We attended the auburn car auction and looked at a few 1970's corvettes, but he would also like something more special than a vette. I mentioned a few low priced Gallardos but he couldn't think of a maintenance cost of a Lambo if anything went wrong.
    I took him to a local supercar dealership and showed him a few cars that were out of price range just to get the ball rolling.
    But yesterday we saw a Testarossa and he was in love. Me being a car enthusiast since I was little, I have been non-stop searching for his ideal model.
    I have found a good handful of models, all of which are crazy cheap but I have to suspect there is one problem or another with them.
    Long story short, Does anyone know of any cheap, old Ferrari's that are somewhat reliable and wont break the bank to change the oil? My price range is 40-100k and i'm going from 1980's-2000's and it doesn't need to be a speed demon.

    There was a long thread a month or two ago covering this sort of ground and in fact they are pretty regular (altho usually started by someone wanting the car for themselves !)

    40k-100k is a big range so you have lots of options. I think you need to first decide on the basics like front engine versus mid engine and v8 versus v12. I am not sure Gallardo maintenance is really going to be more than a Ferrari in the same price range, especially a Testarossa. When I was looking recently, CarGurus had the most cars listed in my area followed by Autotrader and then eBay. There are lots of threads on expected maintenance costs in this forum so looking there is a good start when deciding about a particular model. Good luck.

    As stated before decide first what you or your dad wants; V8/V12. coupe/targa/convertible.
    Are you going to work on the car yourself or not.
    If speed is not a major factor (since the 80s cars will not be as fast as the newer ones) you have pretty good choices from a 308/328, Mondial, to start with. The Mondial will probably be the least costing car and has a ‘backseat’ and decent trunk.

    I'd think that a 348 would suit the bill nicely, especially if your dad saw a TR and fell in love. It has just enough power to be entertaining and it's as visceral a drive as any Ferrari.

    Agreed that a 328 would also make a nice first F-Car, but don't expect it to take a 2018 Camry XSE off the line. It might be a dissapointment to your dad.

    Anything newer than those will need a maintenance slush fund set up. My parent's '97 355 has already gobbled up several thousand dollars since they bought it, and we will be doing the major service this January, parts alone will be about $2500.

    My advice is to first start with someone who will actually fix the car for him and then ask them what their labor rates are, how much time for a repair, their opinions for which is the best, etc. etc. It's a silly idea to buy a Ferrari only to have to ship it 600 miles for maintenance. (It's completely STOOPIT to ask your local Porsche or Buick mechanic to try it!!!!)
    Once you get an idea who will maintain it and the costs associated with it, then decide which one to buy. Before I bought mine I went to Karl and asked him what he thought of a 348 and 360. He pushed me in the direction of the 360.. and now he takes care of her for what work I can't do.

    As for which car he really wants, it's which one tugs at his heart strings for the price. It's emotion not logic. If you have to ask which one to buy IMHO.. you're doing it wrong.
    With a thing like a Ferrari, it's like walking into a ball. You see the beautiful woman you want to dance with and you dance with her. You don't ask guys which woman in the room which one you should dance with..

    Oxymoron. To everyone else, any Ferrari is high-priced. Seriously, dream big while you still can.

    A Gallardo will cost MUCH less to maintain than any car mentioned here, remember, under the skin its pure Audi.
