Anyone with a 308, 328 can you check the frame where the rear shock is mounted. I found a crack in mine, I suspect it is from a previous issue, can't say for sure since I am 5th in line of ownership. But I have noticed this in a couple of other cars, one 308 and another 328. Same spot same crack. If anyone else has this or knows about this, any comments are welcome.

    Thanks

    David

That sure is a clean break, looks more like a seam than a crack.

Not a crack. That is the butt joint of two rectangular tubes. Nothing to worry about there.

So it's fatigued or poorly welded from factory? It is cracked just the same, as in not one continuous piece. Seems its a very stressed part of the frame, no?

Anyone else have this on either side?

No, it is, nor was it ever, welded or one piece. It's just two separate pieces. At least to the best of my knowledge and observation.

I don't understand. The two pieces just sit there beside each other, or it is somehow sleeved inside? I'm sorry, but i can't see how that would be made, especially so close to a suspension pick up point. FWIW, the other side has no crack ir visible seam or anything. I can understand if the two pieces were butt welded then ground smooth, but just sitting there, I don't get it.

My car has some sort of protective paint/coating on that area, so I can't tell if it's two separate parts. But, there is no visible seam whatsoever. I would have assumed it was all the same piece of metal, until I saw this thread.

do the welds on the shock mount look stock to anyone? either way the frame seam is not welded and should be. just set the car up with equal chassis heights at each corner and weld it. make sure the doors are closed and correct tire pressure for the heck of it to keep the heights even

Underneath cracked side. Notice weld at the crack position. Indicates to me that the top weld was finished for aesthetics at the factory.

As I mentioned before, I have seen two other examples the same as my car. Question is, do they have a tendency to crack in this spot, on this side only, or both sides? Or is this a consequence of a minor shunt? So if anyone is admiring their 3x8, take a quick look. If it is cracked, and you know there was no damage of any kind, please post.

    Thanks again

My 78 is also like this. Maybe the approach differs by year.

This was mine ('79 GTS) before restoration. Smooth at the bend. The close-up next to it shows some of the original welding :) It''s a high-stressed area given the spring/shock mount so has probably fatigue cracked. Notch, clean and weld. Remember to isolate the electronics as much as possible-- disconnect battery and earth clamp very close to the weld onto bare metal.

So gently take off the paint on either side of the crack a few mm's and see if there was a weld there.
