Mine is welded and you can just barely see the edges of the bead as it was ground flush and feathered in before being painted. No crack, 1983 GTS 60k miles.

Welds in different spots, more welds, less welds, crooked welds are all part of Italian factory labor done by hand. Plus or minus a little vino or an extra big lunch can vary results greatly.

Its part of the car's character. Live with it and embrace it.

Obvious the weld was part of factory build, crack is aftermath. Seems to me mine cracked due to minor damage at some point in time, maybe a little sideways curb action with the rear wheel. Who knows. Car shows a previous repair at some point in the area. Just wanted to see if it’s a design flaw or from stress/damage. Think I got my answer. Thanks to all

Interesting to see the 328 frame is bigger in the same spot though

I race Formula Ford cars for years. They are built with steel tube frames just like the 308. I would NOT pass on this crack.
I would grove it, weld it and finish it smooth. Then I would consider adding a small elongated diamond shaped patch over the crack.

My 1983 QV looks similar to the 328 and the 85.

If I run my finger across that area, I discern a very slight rise suggesting a well-feathered weld buried under the texture coat.

Mine has a very visible weld line, no effort to finish it smooth prior to paint, on both sides along that seem line. As was previously mentioned, it looks like a seem between two pieces, not a crack.
