Image Unavailable, Please Login Okay didn’t realise Clarkson, Hammond and May’s somewhat underwhelming car social media site was blocked here. Here’s a picture of the car lifted from the article.

Does the article say which color it was? Yellow? White? Else?
Did it go brand new to Bulgaria or as a used car?

Apparently it came to Bulgaria in 1974 (from where is not specified) with 20,000km on the clock and was originally Silver. It was owned by the Toplodoski family in Bulgaria who were something to do with the Bulgarian Motorsports association. The article indicates that it was traded to an Italian collector for a Countach probably in the nineties, but nothing beyond that.

Thanks for the link post, Matt.

There are always ways to beat the system - http://bit.ly/SDAY365

It was Silver, and was seized (not sure why) by customs. Toplodolski was the head of the "Automobile and motorcycle sports" major, part of the National Sports Academy.

I did not notice the story of it being seized in the article, what did I miss?
As written above, I read it was traded for a Lambo Countach from Italy (so logically the Daytona should have moved to Italy at that time).
Also at one point it was sold in Bulgaria for the price of two new Lada - I wish I could have bought it then :)
Btw the car in the first picture (showing the rear of the Daytona) seems to be a Moskvitch.

I found the original Bulgarian article and there are interesting details on how difficult it was to keep it running in communist Bulgaria. The windshield was cracked and they saved up for a while to buy a replacement one from West Germany. It too got cracked in transit! A special challenge was keeping up the Daytona's thirst. The owner's son only remembers seeing the 100 liter fuel tank full once...

    Try this Marcel.
It looks to have the exhausts in the wrong place, so I guess they had a job getting an Ansa one!

It was seized somehow by the Bulgarian customs for unclear reason and from who, and then gifted to Toplodolski (the dad) as a gift for his contributions of developing the Racing Academy in Bulgaria, and rally championship results he held. It indeed went to Italy afterwards, two owners after the famous father-son rally drivers.

It is Moskvitch. 408 I believe. Great contrast.

The article from Auto-Motorsport-bg (if that the one you are referring to) which is an interview with Ilian (the son), has a few inconsistencies like the tire sizes etc, or that it was owned by 3 guys at the same time after the Toplodolski family. The classiccar-bg forum has this car discussed in length, and there are some guys on there that know the owners after, and the one collector that traded it for the Countach. After that the car went out of sight.

@Wheels1 great catch on the exhaust. I didn't notice that, at first.

@Marcel Massini I would love to hear if you know anything more about the car. It will spike some interest back in the Bulgarian classic community.

I wonder what other iron curtain exotics were around? I remember the story of a US diplomat who owned a Porsche Speedster and took it to Czechoslovakia and would get followed by the gov't spies and just outrun them

There was a Porsche 911 Turbo in the GDR from 1977 onwards, ownded by Hartmut Thassler, a big name in Eastern German motorsports at that time and for that reason quite privileged. Story is in German magazine OLDTIMER MARKT 4/2013.
