Per December 1976 issue of Road & Track: The blue 308 in action on its cover. The tagline read: "Probably the best sports car I've ever driven -Bob Bondurant."

Bondurant went on to say, "The main thing I like about the 308 is that the car is so neutral you can do anything you want with it. In other words, it doesn't understeer badly or oversteer badly. It is an easy car to drive, so you can go through a turn, lift off to make the car oversteer and then just really plant your foot in it and it takes off."

Bondurant continued, "This is so much better than a Daytona. That car steers heavy, sits high and has a bag of power, but you can't really use the power like you can in this car. This is more like driving a Ford GT40 when they first came out."

And finally, "You get into a Porsche and they work fine up to a certain speed and then they can go into an understeer or an oversteer; kind of a snap oversteer. With the 308, even the guy who isn't quite as adept could take it that much closer to the limit."

That's a pretty impressive review. Was it a GTS or GTB he was testing? Thanks

The coupe!!!!!! Based on my experience with targas from several manufacturers and the associated chassis flex, I wonder if the review would have been as glowing with a GTS. Thanks for that cover shot. Pretty cool!

The R&T test car reviewed by Bondurant was the very first 308 2 seater imported to the USA. It was imported as a demo/test car, so couldn't be registered beyond the short test period, so it was sold to a dealer who turned it into a race car - that was driven by Paul Newman.

I can tell the difference in the flex with the targa off I found out that using 17 inch wheels with 235 / 245 Pirelli P ZERO tires makes my 328 handle like a slot car when the targa roof is on In hind sight I would have waited for a GTB but I can say that taking the top off for the first several years of ownership was pretty cool I dont take it off nearly as much the last 6 or 7years

I wonder how many 308's are still around? That is in their pure (for the most part ) form. There might be fewer than we think.

Interesting period wheel. Can’t make out the maker. Looks like an Abarth. Good wheel for a driven car. The stock spokes cover the cluster a fair bit of the time while driving in hills.
