Hi Derek et al, Just got back a price from one of my Irish suppliers who will do first class work on cnc. However, their price is €500 per set just for machining. The grilles would not be polished and would need painting or anodising afterwards. I was thinking of doing my own with a rattle can of black then lacquer. They would be machining front and rear to match as closely as possible the original and this (so far) is based upon my 1980GTB measurements, I left out the four mounting holes. It would be possible to probably get a rectangular piece if somebody wanted to get cut the final shape themselves.

Downside is they would need a minimum of 4 sets. And obviously the cost. Truthfully they are giving me a special price as I get things machined for work and hourly rates are not cheap on this equipment.

Sending on the STEP file this morning to James. I'd prefer to leave the sample until we were placing an order. (Sorry)

And I got back my quote from China. $450 per set. There doesn't seem to be a lot of interest in these figures and I'm not surprised. We'll see what the others come back with.

Well. I've ordered a set carved out of solid Aluminium. Should have them made up in a few days, Then decide on Anodise (Better) or paint (Favoured as closest to original)

I hate to be incredibly smug, especially after registering my interest in this previously, but I’ve managed to find a pair of good original speaker grills here in the U.K. can’t believe my luck. No I didn’t get the ones that lunatic on eBay is selling for $2500!

I finally heard back from one of my suppliers. $210ea for their minimum of ten sets. The slots in the back would be 1mm shallower (not visibly different from the front) as the original extruded design would be too hard to cnc machine without high scrap rates.

No worries, I'd be smug too May I ask a cost and where please? If it was a breakers there's a few little bits I'm looking for. No longer grills although mine are not here yet. Hopefully to concourse standard. Well Done in tracking them down.

Second supplier came back at $270/pair but MOQ is ten sets and I still have hundreds of valves that are moving very slowly on ebay. Did any other model use these?

Yes still smugness waves over me when I see them sitting on my desk, perfect condition too!

I was just lucky, they came from a local Ferrari specialist who had them off a car he turned into a Michelotto. £400.

So no interest at $270/pair? I think Max still needs some, anyone else?

I would like a finished set.
My car has perforated peg board and NO grill. I just never thought to look at another car.

Are folks interested in an "original" part or a good looking item? I do not know what the back side of the door card looks like but
a fellow on Youtube is making a molded mesh shape that would give a good look.

I have a 35 year career in audio engineering and am not a fan of car audio. I the two cars that I have, Ford Crown Vic and Jaguar XJ-6, where I could hear the radio I listen to Boston Sports Talk. The rest of the fleet are to noisy at 65MPH to hear the radio. The tops are most always down.
That said a bunch of the tasks a car audio person would take to improve audio performance particularly in the doors will lower noise and vibration coming through the panels and into the car. 100 % coverage of the inside of the door skin with various damping materials will reduce panel noise. Sealing the access hole to the regulator will be a good task. Ditto to covering the entire floor with a dampening material!!!
The 308 seems to have some good coverage in the motor area. What is behind the seats? Road noise is 40-60hz and so is very difficult to affect. Reducing panel vibration is worth while.

I seldom drive my 308 with the top in place but do find it to be a reasonable tourer with it fitted. Can it be made a lot quieter. A lot would be 3db as this is generally perceived as a near 100 percent improvement. That is until one gets accustomed to it and wants the next 3db.

    Ideas? Comments?

Got my grilles from China, Duty and VAT all sorted and I am really pleased with them, Profile is identical to the original. I just have to get the black and the clear coat completed. I'll be posting the door picture then. And then I'll have three sets to try and get rid of! I'll probably see how the finish works out on my first before I decide to sell "finished" or unfinished" Very hard to take pictures of a shiny surface.

Getting There, airbrushed but still not fully happy. The masking tape removed the lacquer which demonstrates that I need to somehow surface treat the Aluminium. They will never be as shiny as original doing it this way. For the next set I'll try something different. Having said that they still look fabulous, just that I'm a perfectionist.

Andrew, I would get them anodised black and then belt sand the top surface and then polish. This is what I asked for in my requests to the two suppliers. I have found plating and anodising shops don't mind doing small jobs if you are prepared to wait until they are doing a batch that colour. Even here in expensive London I got about 15 pieces anodised type 3 for £90.

I have 3 takers for the $270/pair so need a couple more for this to work.

I was going to clear anodise with a thin coat and then paint the black on the next set. The black is good, It's the polished aluminium that I want to eliminate future tarnishing.

You might be able to dye just the bottom black. After clear type 2 anodising it is just dye that changes the colour and you can buy the dye kits online if you want to try it yourself. A shallow bath of the dye would work. The anodised finish is a bit more dull than the originals though.

I put a set of grills up on eBay to test the water. They cost me a fair amount by the time I paid Irish duty and vat. I didn't advertise here because I think the expectations were for a lower cost. The seller looking for $2500 seems to have taken a rest but somebody else has a set at £900.

They are on ebay.com but available to worldwide so I think you need to search for location worldwide Derek. To be honest I am not expecting a huge volume of interest or a quick sale!

Sorry I know this is an old thread but I'm in the process of buying a 78 308 GTS and the speaker grills are missing. Just wondered if anybody was still making replacements? The ones pictured in the thread look really good and I'd love to be able to buy a pair. Or would really appreciate any help in getting some made. Thanks very much, Graham.

Hi Graham, I still have remanufactured grills. I haven't advertised them here as I'm not supposed to sell on here so pm me please. These are my car, not perfection as could be more highly polished in my perfect eyes but not bad! Image Unavailable, Please Login
