Hi All. I finally got my F12 and am very happy with the car - of course.

I have the paint bubbling problem with my rear vents and seek advice on how best to address it without lowering the value (too much) of the car by applying aftermarket paint (and possibly replacing rear side windows).

As you can see the bubbling is minimal – so far, but it does need to be addressed at some point. Also, my dealer (through F USA, I believe) will pay for the repair, so I should get it done while the offer is on the table.

My real issue here is that my auto body shop (who do a lot of Ferraris – and the local Ferrari dealer uses them as well) wants to extend the clear coat over the roof to blend in the repair. They have done this application of clear coverage extension beyond the repair area with my other high end cars and the result is very good.

Additionally, the guy there said that they’d have to pop out the small rear side windows to properly paint/blend the vent repair but there would be a risk of breaking the glass while attempting to remove the panes.

I appreciate the effort they want to put into the repair/refinish but I’m wondering if being so extensive with the repair would knock the car’s value down more by increasing the area of non-original painting – even if it’s the clearcoat – not to mention the possibility of new side window panes.

What do you guys think? Thanks, in advance.

Get it done properly, and now. See the extensive thread about techniques.
The body specialist needs to know about separating the grate from the paint with a gasket of some type, and be skilled working with aluminum. All tools, grinders, etc., need to be proper material not to deposit further dissimilar metal flakes into area being prepped.
Ferrari has a bulletin about this and your dealer will have that all outlined for the body shop to follow.

Get it done properly and at an official Ferrari approved body shop. Get both vents done at the same time. It is only a matter of time until the other vent starts bubbling if one side has started.

Perhaps even get a good detailer to go over the entire bodywork and look for other areas of corrosion. It can happen elsewhere and while the dealer is willing to pay, get them to fix everything.

I am in the middle of this very situation right now with an F12 that I recently purchased. Get it fixed- correctly- by the Ferrari authorized place and be done with it.

I do not believe that the rear windows need to be removed to fix the issue. The way that you're describing the rest of the process (e.g. the dealer re-clearcoating the rest) is consistent with how I've been told the repair is done per FNA.

Remember, larger rust issues started as incipient rust issues.

    Good luck.

Is this not covered by Ferrari? This is clearly a defect with Ferrari

Thanks for your suggetions guys. I'll inquire about the Ferrari bulletin and find out more about why they want to remove the rear window panes.
