2 x 512S chassis were used in the development of Modulo. They were the last 2 unsold of the 25 built for homologation according to Paolo Martin, Modulo's designer at Pininfarina. The second one was used for a 1:1 scale mock up. The 0864 number was allocated to a spare 612 Can Am engine only, NOT to a chassis or anything to do with Modulo as far as I can gather.

I found it interesting that in my correspondence with him he always referred to the car as the "Module" rather than Modulo.

"Module" plural of Modulo? I only have a rudimentary understanding of Italian.

Modulo is translated from Italian to English as Module. Paolo Martin designed it solely as a Dream Car to showcase internal and external modular design and that is what it is. He said it was not possible to make it into a road going car in that form and if he had thought of a road car version he would have come up with different solutions. He was not consulted for advice on making the car driveable.

It’s a great piece of design and it’s great that it’s on the road.

Ferrari Modulo PF is not based on a 512S frame
    There is no “27” nor a “1027” s/n for 512s.

Near the back of the 68, 69,70 Ferrari Year Book there is a colour spread on Pininfarina. The Modulo (their spelling) is pictured and the caption says: PF "Modulo" su telaio 512 S.

    Just saying what is says.

Octane Magazine September 2013 said the car was based on 512 S #1046.

Are there any pictures of the chassis of this car ?

After further correspondence with Paolo Martin I believe only one of the two chassis received by Pininfarina from Ferrari was used for the Modulo project. The other chassis, whether that was a 312P, 512S or 612 chassis was used for the yellow 512S Berlinetta Speciale designed by Filippo Sapino,

It is also a mystery why Modulo has a 512S chassis plate with the number 27 on it when only 25 512S chassis were built.

This plate appears screwed on - not usual for a chassis identifying plate. These are usually held with rivets, unless the stamping is on the frame itself.

A lot of internet sources on the Modulo claim that the chassis was originally built as 512 S chassis no. 27, converted into and tested as a 612 CanAm in 1968 and then handed over to Pininfarina as basis for the Modulo.

I thought the 512 S was built as a reaction of Porsche building 25 917s in 1969. Do I miss something or is there something wrong in the chronology? A conversion of 612 CanAm into 512 S seems more logical than the other way around.

Another question is: is there proof that 612 CanAm chassis 0864 ever existed?
