    Hi all,

according to maserati manual for early V8, like indy and ghibli, the ignition coil is a bosch B221 040 003.

but, did you know a cross reference for new one ? This ignition coil should be compatible with points.

Thanks for your help, or idea .

    Ludo, All,

I've got the info that these coils were very specific, and are considered as Competition coils.

2 Bosch Specialists I know in Germany and the Netherlands even never did hear about these !

    Absolutely no real substitute/replacement/cross ref.

    Only a recommended adaptation : Bosch 0 221 121 001.

    And only in old versions.

Above all no modern Brazilain made coild w/ alloy / grey body.

    Alfa Montreals originally used 2 x 0 221 121 002 coils.

As an alternative, you also could use Beru ZS-109.

    Mark,

As you can see, they do not speak about the coil ref. B ....

They even do not speak about Ghibli SS at all.

The red coil on the right is :

    - to be used with ballast ONLY, and not electronic ignition compatible,

    - made in Brazil and nobody serious will advise it.

    Best,

Interesting. I wonder what Mercedes recommend for the 6.3/6.9 M100 V8 engine with the same dual points setup.

If its run with the Bosch CDI its not a coil its a single wind amplifier, Porsche also used them with the 70s 911

Did you experience any pb ? Even at high revs ?

But do you still have the original Bosch CDI ?

Have you still got the bendiw red top fuel pump(s) or modern Facet ?

On my own, I'm waiting for my B221 040 003 coil to check improvements.

    Or not.

    Got the B221... coil.

    Runs perfectly.

Just in case, I also bought a compatible NOS Bosch coil for 911 RSR.

The B221 coil is twice as much big that the RSR one.

Now, we also fixed the Facet fuel pumps pb.

And I had my Bosch original CDI restored and heavily upgraded un germany.

With fuel pumps feeding well, better than new CDI, and the right coil, it's still another car.

    However not yet perfectly tuned.

So, the car was the last 2 weeks at a Specialist's for the last carb... tune.

    Now it's ready.

As soon as I get the car back home, will post pics, and impressions.

Here are the pics of the 2 coils in place thx to an additional BMW coil holder !!

    It's provisional only.

Until I tested both of them on the bank.

The largest one (below) is the B Competition original for SS.

The littlest (above) the replacement one advised when we have not the original. Impossible to find.

With the stroboscope, or tuning the carbs by the ear, we did not fid any difference.

Finally, both of the coils tested and perfectly running and equals in results on the bank, at any regime.

So, I choose to fit the original and huge Bosch Competition coil in its specific very large backet.

The 911RS one will go into the rear trunk w/ a tool in 10mm, just in case. Image Unavailable, Please Login
