Wow that's crazy the car is damaged and so new. Was it damaged in transport to the dealer? I can see that airbag warning tag hanging off the glovebox area so it looks like a brand new car and not used/sold.
Repair sleeves installed to join the new panels. Originally BMW recommended gluing the 1/4 panel together but switched back to a traditional weld. The issue was the structural K2 joining compounding leaving a ghost outline of the repair area through the paint. BMW recommends self piercing rivets over welding on most body repairs. The reasoning for this is welding can potentially weaken the metal from heat cycling and burn off corrosion protection on the rear of the weld. The 1/4 panel was glued on using BMW structural adhesive then riveted in OEM recommended location with BMW rivets. Its very important to make sure your collision repair center has the correct equipment to properly repair your vehicle and follows OEM repair procedures. Originally BMW recommended just gluing the 1/4 panel exterior connections with K2 structural adhesive. The issue was on pearls and silver paint you could eventually see a ghost line of the repair area. So if the repair procedure is searched via vin number you can see they now recommend welding in the connection areas. Its important to have the correct welder for high strength steel and aluminum. This all seems pretty expensive from an insurance point of view. Why was it not written off? What percent of retail value do they typically attempt to repair it? The damage of course does not appear structural, but I see hail damaged cars written off simply because cosmetic repair (like this) is too expensive.
Every state is different as far as total thresholds. NY is 75% of the cars value but theres other factors that determine if its repaired or totaled.
