I have been watching live reports, sounds like it was a sudden quake which is a bit weird. Hope all are ok

 

Jim, we are safe, but lots of damage to the city, electricity, water, homes, business, etc. Broke up the ice on Lake Hood, some bridges out, some declared unsafe. Gas stations and grocery stores mostly closed. It was shallow and close, and over 50 aftershocks so far (some in the 5's).

 

Anchorage M7.0: What we know so far

A magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck just seven miles north of Anchorage at 8:29am on Friday morning, at a depth of about 27 miles. The earthquake caused power outages, damage to roads and buildings, and closures of schools, businesses and government offices. The extent of the damage is not yet clear, and we are still waiting for word on whether there were any casualties.

Anchorage police are requesting that people keep their lines clear as much as possible and only call for legitimate emergencies. DOT has requested that people stay off the roads as much as possible. If you must travel, drive slowly and carefully, and report any road damage that you discover.

This is the largest earthquake to strike near Anchorage since the 2016 M7.1 Iniskin earthquake. Because this morning's quake was so much closer, the impacts to Anchorage and Mat-Su are far more severe and widespread. The picture is still coming together, but damage reports so far include the following:

• Seward Highway closed at mile post 112 due to a landslide
• Water mains ruptured and nonstructural damage to terminals at the Anchorage airport.
• Significant road damage including the International Road on-ramp
• A roof or ceiling collapse at a Key Bank in South Anchorage
• Damage and flooding at the Alaska Railroad headquarters

These are just representative examples of the kinds of reports we are seeing. Meanwhile, the Anchorage School District has asked parents to pick up their children if possible, and students at some schools have been moved to other locations that have power. State offices have closed for the day, and the railroad and TAPS have both shut down for safety inspections.

There have already been many aftershocks, including a magnitude 5.7 just three miles north of Anchorage. On a normal day, that earthquake would have dominated state news on its own. We expect a vigorous aftershock sequence, and we will release more detailed aftershock information soon. There was no noticeable foreshock for this earthquake.

Here is the USGS aftershock forecast:

• Low (4%) probability of another earthquake equal or greater than magnitude 7.0
• 27% chance of a magnitude 6+ aftershock, and it is most likely that 0-3 of these will occur
• 78% chance of magnitude 5 or greater aftershocks, but likely no more than around 20 of these
• Up to 2,200 aftershocks greater than magnitude 3 are possible

 

So, about 6,000 aftershocks so far, with a nice 5.4 this morning. The main quake and aftershocks are only about 10 miles from the city, so they are really good shakers.
