Currently described as chassis #020 (a 206 S Dino raced by Clemente Ravetto) and fitted with the old 212 E Montagna Spider bodywork. The real 212 E Montagna Spider is 0862 and lives in Switzerland since January 2006 (with a different bodywork). Marcel Massini
Several 206 S have been equipped with bodies similar to the 212 E. If we compare period photos there is no doubt that the body on Hofer's car is the original #0862.. But it would be interesting to inspect this car to see the chassis number.
#022 at Monza in 1967 with Clemente Ravetto. Same car at the Targa Florio 1970 with Pietro Lo Piccolo. And #022 today. Image Unavailable, Please Login
022 at Retromobile Paris February 2008. This is NOT the Egon Hofer car, which uses the number 020. Marcel Massini Image Unavailable, Please Login
If #020 was sold to Clemente Ravetto, did it race it ? Are there any period pictures of #020 ? A photo with Egon Hofer at the Rossfeldrennen in 1970. So this should be #020 with a V6 Dino engine and the original body of #0862, right ? And after that the car disappeared all this time ? Image Unavailable, Please Login
This is from the Behamberg hillclimb in Amstetten, Austria. Hofer also raced it at the 5 August 1970 Erzherzog Johann Trophy at the Oesterreichring on race #1. Marcel Massini
The Hofer car is NOT 016. Here are very recent pix showing the chassis ID tag and the actual chassis number 016. This car is factory certified and has a regular 206 S Spider bodywork. Marcel Massini Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Hofer car at Mdina: Here's the placard indicating "020" (see red arrow). Of course, the history listed on that placard has zero to do with that car (only with the bodywork) but is for 0862 (the 212 E Montagna Spider). Whoever did that placard was a bit overenthusiastic……or was told to be……. Marcel Massini Image Unavailable, Please Login
Herr Hofers 206SP/212E is a cool car whatever it is but he seems deeply involved in some questionable cars, #0818, 250SWB #2701 and now this car and thats just the Ferrari's. Is he Austria's answer to David Piper?
I had a sit down meeting with Hofer about 8 years ago at retromobile...very courteous typical of aristocracy but I felt very uneasy about him and hat he was stating, it was not about a Ferrari. Then some weeks later in Modena, my favorite Modenese, a person who is hugely respected and liked, in his eighties, who has helped me a lot, said: "Hofer e un falso." Meaning he is not to be trusted. We were discussing a car he purported to own but which no longer existed but he had bits of it...sounds familiar?
The unfortunate thing for me is that like Piper and a number of other collectors is that they had absolutely genuine cars in their collection, or the sole remains of such but were/are happy producers of a number of fakes, no doubt based on large parts collections but replica chassis. Now no doubt some of their cars are fakes and no doubt others are genuine as can be but it rather puts rather a shadow over the genuine, as ever buyer beware I guess.
Nothing at all wrong with Ned Spieker's #2701GT. Plenty wrong with the #2701GT that Herr Hofer has been classic racing and showing in Europe, for a start it isn't #2701GT. Search for Hofer + 2701 brings up this thread https://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/threads/250-gt-swb-2701-egon-hofer.498942/
So, E. Hofer raced #020 with the old 212 E body in 1970. What happened to #020 after that ? Why was the old 212 E body removed again from #020 and where was #020 all that time ?
Pietro lo Piccolo raced a Dino 206 S on 12.12.1970 at Val d’Anapo - Sortino. I have always assumed this to be chassis 022, but that seems unlikely just 2 months after the Enna Pergusa crash.
