Confirmed today LB is indeed a V8 with v close to or same Pista power levels....more an exterior facelift but with some key changes in other areas (as suspected). Following 2020 year is a totally new and next level 488 replacement (BB)....but even more money again. Criteria to qualify for BB ownership so there will be some tears and moaning from the usual suspects. New models will also be released at Geneva inc new 812 version. So those with 488 need to prepare and steel themselves to suck it up. The LB will be more expensive though as will be BB.....if that helps or, is any consolation. GL and may the force be with you o_O

Typically the next car has the same performance (or greater) than the special version - and achieved with much more ease on the driver.

That's how it works. The power has to be usable.

For what it’s worth, the 992 GT3 test mule is not turbocharged.

Prolly right. I've gone off the 3 since the 2. No point.....i don't want one (3) any more. It would never be the same. In fact nothing is the same at the moment. Maybe Pista will change that.

Yes. I think the question to ask yourself is whether Ferrari remembers this. I think they are always learning too. I also think the point about the financial meltdown is relevant. The 458 was shown in 2009 but it did not hit the market until 2010. I also think its worth mentioning that the DCT is a real departure part between older and newer cars. Certainly the Pista is expensive and what comes next will likely surpass the Pista. But my guess is it won't be as focused.

September 2009 was a lot different than Sept 2007. 430 Scud debuted right before the peak in the markets. If you bought a Scud, you lost potential 50% of your net worth in the next 18 months if you held stocks. The 458 debuted in late 2009 after the financial markets were rescued, stocks were up 50%, and continued for the next 8-9 years of bull market.

Anyone who was able to buy a 458 had good credit, wasn't overextended, and maybe even bought the bottom before recouping 50% of their losses. 430 Scud buyers at best didn't get margin calls heh

I think this is exactly right.

Also, this "successor" vehicle is really an updated 488- its on the same basic platform. So this model won't be the revolution model the 458 was. It's possible this is part of the lesson? Who really knows. I would expect the Pista to be the most focused driving experience and this next one might have more power but its personality to be a bit more relaxed. Lets see what they do. Hopefully we don't go into a horrible recession this time!

Just to clarify: the LB coming next year 'will eventually' be replaced by the proper replacement LB with the new chassis/power-trains (V6 hybrid) in 2020/2021? Just making sure ;) Thanks a lot!

So, any thoughts why Ferrari are doing a third version on this platform? Suggestions might be...

    - Can’t develop Hybrid in time for model replacement so need an interim car while Hybrid is being fully developed for a proper model run.

    - Didn’t plan for an interim car but had issues with Hybrid which is delayed so needed a makeshift car to prop up mid V8 sales without over-producing Pistas

    - Competition from other brands - Mac and Porsche etc. - has slowed sales for 488 so they want to inject something into the tail end of the platform while they plan a big model change (in fact mid V8 line is actually splitting into two, thereby doubling the development requirement).

My personal guess would be the first - this was always planned, just like when the Testarossa had a major model change with a completely new engine configuration and platform format they made a short run third model (F512M) on the existing platform.

Which would mean the new short-run car could be comparatively rare.

It'll be interesting to see how this comes out; until now the sportier, limited in time version was always the latest iteration. So it had some arguments to keep its prestige against the next generation model, even though this one had better performance at a lower price.
So now, how could they play it, introducing a new refinement of the same platform? if it's as expensive as the Pista, it will devalue the Pista in the eyes of those praising exclusivity; if it's at a lower price, it will be a threat in objective value. Tough marketing call...

May I ask what was said about December 2018? One of the UAE Ferrari managers is having dinner in Maranello right now and I was asking myself if there was an imminent (potentially private) reveal of a new model.

The earlier rumor had been that 'big brother' was going to have an early exclusive preview in December. I said they should call this big brother the "Mugello" after another famous Italian race track!
