Great! My first question is if McLaren is on the world stage producing road going cars with engines
badged as McLaren, why can't they also do this in Formula One rather than relying on Renault, Honda,
Mercedes-Benz et.al?

Seems to me if a company such as this would like to establish its road going brand in the highest
profile racing series in the world, they'd do with engines badged in their own name just as their
road cars are.

No one has been able to explain this as yet.

Probably because they are hurting for money and get a discount from Renault for using their name rather than re-badging. Honda gave them free engines for that reason and Mercedes was giving them a good deal as well for being title sponsor for engines. It always comes down to money.

They just got a $200 million investment. Probably to break ground on a engine facilty.

They should just buy out Ricardo and bring them in-house IMO.

 

I just checked out the forum and switched it to the "old style" like I prefer on FerrariChat. The only trouble is, the logo at the top disappeared!

Rob, how about Porsche Chat? I'm on Pelican, Early S Registry, and Rennlist, etc., but some of those sites are a bit old and clunky, and don't have the diversity of forums that FChat does.

 

Does this mean he will create a Mercedes chat, and all those lost fans that congregate here will have somewhere to go and post in the right place at last?

I can suggest this, because others have suggested other forums to be set up. I hope I don’t get flack for the suggestion as it seems perfectly reasonable to suggest such

 

I guess McLaren just hasn't the Financial resources to start making their own racing engine. That cost a lot of money !

The former AUDI CEO estimated that to start from scratch and be able to challenge the hybrid Mercedes engine would take 5 years and cost $1Billion at least.

Just look how Renault and Honda struggle, being big car companies with big budgets.

McLaren don't build their road cars engines, although they own the intellectual rights to them, but subcontract the assembly to Ricardo plc.

McLaren is relatively a new road car company and there is the economy of scale to consider for a manufacturer that sells only a few thousand cars a year.

Even Aston Martin stops making their engines now, and use Mercedes ones

 

I think Ricardo plc is a bigger company than McLaren.

They work for the automotive industry, the defense industry , the aircraft industry and have several car manufacturers in their client portfolio.

They subcontract for Jaguar, Land Rover, Audi, Mercedes, Citroen and plenty of others they are not allowed to talk about.

It's the fact they are independent that make them attractive as consultant, as they are often contracted by rival car makers.

I have to accept that you may be right !

Nevertheless, I think that Ricardo being bought by a manufacturer could possibly kill its business with others. .

It takes nearly 1B $$$ to engineer a F1 engine to the current formula.
This is a Billion dollars that would not be available elsewhere in the program.
And with the loss in sponsorship with their lack of performance, it is no wonder.

 

Saw a white 720s parked on the side of a road in Hong Kong last week. Still doesn't do it for me. It's like its trying too hard to be "exotic". I hope this thread of letting "aero" be the "designer" is over soon. Look at the new Ferrari Monza -- forget the freakin' aero and give us some sexy curves!

I'm guessing I'm not MChat material.

And all these 2 seat exotics are getting HUGE. When you see it parked next to an Asian branded mini van, you start to understand just how big cars are getting.

 

May I ask something? Do I have to get register or the existing username and password are suitable for the McLaren forum?

Started my first thread in their F1 section.

Given that the community is smaller I expect it to be less lively, but so what.

McLaren used to be the pinnacle of F1 and it'd be nice if they find their way back. As far as the road cars are concerned, I think they are top notch. Design and performance wise.

 

What is the banning policy on McLaren chat for members constantly bashing Vettel?
