I've never heard of that site. Is it legit? Like eBay for wine/spirits? I have some bottles of wine I want to get rid of and would rather sell direct at full price.
Think of it as site like craigslist, it is legit but heed caution Pappy old fashions....oh my, so many people would be turning in their graves. It is his money though, he can make pappy margaritas if he wants to.
I scored 2 bottles of Stagg Jr this week, for the $56 per bottle price it's amazing. What is even more amazing is how rare even "good" bourbons are these days. Couple years ago the local stores couldn't give away Weller's and now you can't find it. Also NLA: Willett, Blanton's, etc.
Yeah, blame reddit and the hype train for that. Elmer t lee and weller are almost impossible to get unless you know people, it’s all the flippers fault. They can’t get pappy so they’re trying to justify the next best thing, problem is that’s it’s not.
I have completely missed the boat on Stagg Jr. I don't get it. For some reason, it is just not appealing to me at all. I was super excited when I found a bottle for around $55 based on reviews and word of mouth, but was really let down. I cannot place my finger on what I found unappealing, but something was just off to my taste.
Wow, in the past we've enjoyed similar stuff. Do you remember which batch you had? Batch 9 (131.9 proof) was fantastic, every bit as good as Pappy 20. Batch 10 (126.4 proof) was great, but not as fantastic as the prior batch. To my palette Stagg Jr is better than Eagle Rare, Weller's, Blanton's and pretty much everything that's not insanely priced. But I get it. A lot of people rave about John J Bowman single barrel. I've tried it and it's just average to me.
I don't recall which Batch. That's really high praise. Maybe I'll find another bottle and try it again.
Bought my father-in-law a bottle of Lagavulin Single Malt 16 year for Christmas (thanks to advice given on this board). I can't say I love the stuff, but he (a genuine peet-head) loves it!
Nice, Might also want to check out Ardbeg, just opened the 10 year tonight. Image Unavailable, Please Login
So I think I have a problem guys...just wiped down my booze storage. This is just my whisky/scotch selection. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Tamas, That does look like a problem. The flavor pallete isn't diverse enough. I would add an Oban and a Macallan cask strength to the Scotch and a Noah's Mill to the bourbons Regards, Art S.
Great point! It is missing an oban/lavagulin. For now the laphroaig is holding me down. Fire and cane was a pleasant surprise after the IPA XX from them.
This is my favorite Bourbon, however, Badzzaie, have you noticed the batches really vary? My last two bottles I got were not as good as previous for some reason. I don't know if it's just me though.
I did a personal 'tour' of Islay and got to sample all 8 (+ some from Port Ellen) This came out as my favorite by far. I did a A/B with Uigeadail and ended up liking this much more. It goes without saying you have to like peat. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Xenu, I cannot afford Pappy (even if I can find it) would love to hear your thoughts and tasting notes. From.what I read it is.like tears from heaven. Hype or real? Thanks in advance for your time.
Correyvreckan is my favorite ardbeg out of the line up Along with an oa, nice choice. Below is my mix of whisk(e)y cellar, first world problems I know. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Nice stash!!! (woo hoo) I have not tried Oa yet, do you like it better then Correyvreckan? I tried Kelpie (not a fan)
An oa is around $60 and while I usually don’t like anything under 100 proof, it’s surprisingly well rounded and very ardbeg. I haven’t opened my kelpie yet, but I had grooves (committee edition) and it was alright. Springbank does burgundy well and at cask strength.
I can't afford Pappy at the current prices either. I have been a Bourbon guy forever and I discovered PVW when it was affordable and available. The PVW23 was always in short supply but by the time Suntory scooped up Jim Beam the supply of the 23 was short because they just didn't put enough up to age 15 years ago. I have a good friend in the spirits biz that always kept me supplied with PVW 12 and 20, as well as the 23 for 20 years. More than a few FChat members got the hook up in the past from my buddy. Pappy Van Winkle's Family Reserve 23 Year Old is one of the legendary Bourbons IMHO. If you ever get a chance to sample PVW 23 it is worth the price of a rock glass full. The hype has caused the pricing to go insane. PVW23 priced in the thousands of dollars a bottle versus hundreds of dollars that it used to be is a little bit hard to "swallow" to me. Every time anything becomes scarce, people have to have it. YMMV
Surprisibgly to me, I'm not a fan of Ardbeg 10 (too musty for me) - I also like Lagavulin 16 and of course Laphroaig 10.
