    Hello, everyone.

I came across this listing, and I'm wondering what this car really is:

1959 Ferrari 250 GT on Ebay

Any idea? How "Ferrari" is it?

And -- bigger question -- when does a "restored" Ferrari become a reproduction of an original car?

Thank you for your assistance. I'm a long-time lurker, and I appreciate the knowledge and expertise on this board a great deal.

    You've taught me a lot.

    VV

250 GT SWB replica by GTO Engineering based on a 250 GT Pinin Farina Coupe. Engine 3.5 litres.

It would be wiser to make a section for
    GTO Engineering :)

There's always an idiot somewhere on this planet. All one has to do is to find him.
(PS: This was the leitmotif of a (then) well-known classic car dealer in Southern California in the late 1980s and 1990s).

(PS2: Said dealer went bankrupt, after he had sold a replica SWB as the real one to a renowned collector in Japan! The Japanese found out and sued big time, and thus the CA dealer closed his doors abruptly).

Does GTO Engineering use a donor Ferrari chassis to build one of these?

Or is it a from-scratch recreation?

    Thanks,

250 GTEs, 250 PF Coupés, 330 GT 2+2 and even Queen Marys (365 GT 2+2) are butchered and their identities and paperwork used to build such replicas.

What a shame. Don't all those cars have longer wheelbases than a 250GT SWB? Or does GTO modify that as well?

Why not just built one new from the ground up and then leave off the Ferrari name?

    Thanks for the response.

normaly as I have seen GTO uses original ferrari chassis/frames with the original number, but they add some letters

so their cars also could then get official registered for normal street use. otherwise if they would built an own frame/chassis it would be a brand new car and has to comply with the latest emission regulations

They cut the frames and shorten to 2400 mm.

I actually like this car quite a bit. Probably a lot of fun to drive. But they’re definitely on drugs with the opening bid and asking price.

I have seen this car, and it is quite nice. However, the body has a strange mish-mash of early and late features, so one cannot say it is "correct" for either iteration. For the record, I am sort of neutral on the larger issue of destroying one car to make another. I certainly understand (and am mostly in agreement with) Marcel and others who feel its a crime punishable by fill in the blank. But a car is an object that we can own, and as owner we do have the right to do with it what we wish.

    Mr Niles.

Thanks for the information. For my edification, what's the "mish-mash" you see?

I appreciate your expertise, as well as the expertise of everyone here.

Side window shape, early. Sliding window late. Rear window vent, who knows. I've seen them in the "glass" as well as in the body above the rear window. Fender vents? Gas filler? Just from memory; I'd have to look again to be more specific.
