Simple yet very critical to the Countach design. Where do you stand and why?

To me, the Countach was crazy, but not good crazy from a looks department. I think one of the reasons is because it succeeded the Miura which was one of the most beautiful cars I could have imagined.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the world countach, in the Modenese dialect, mean "shock" or the equivalent of "Oh my god" ??

400S, build date 12/79. It is an aluminum adjustable wing. This syle was used on the earlier 400S cars.

As the factory did not homologate the wing for application for their road cars, strictly speaking they were not supposed to be assembled at the factory, that's why you typically don't see images of the cars inside the factory with wings affixed.

My understanding was that the wings were made and affixed by a local supplier who came to the factory to do the job.

It appears this rule was relaxed by the advent of the 25th Anniversario where you can see some cars fitted with wings inside the works.

Ken, no slight whatsoever, my post was meant at face value as "you are absolutely right, anyone who thinks it's cool to cut long slot holes or drill large bolt holes through a Countach's body panels would of course consider reversal an easy fix", this is a simple case of my making an effort to understand the mind of a modder.

Joe - further to this, do original build sheets and/or window stickers from downdrafts indicate when a wing was included at the factory?

Understood, however the wing is a subjective thing, and respectfully, that's exactly how I feel about it, whilst noting that according to this poll, the majority feel the Countach is best without the wing.

I have not seen a Lamborghini factory final invoice note the application of a wing, however I have only seen a finite number of these items so perhaps it was recorded somewhere.

Again, FWIW I have no problem with someone wanting to keep the wing if the car was delivered that way by the factory, I'm just not especially a big wing-fan.

can this logic be basically apply to the lp400s ?

The original lp400 narrow body was basically the same car without the add on flares, wide rubber and front spoiler that added weight and drag reducing top speed. I wouldnt go as far label the lp400s additions as useless boy-racer supplementary appendages though.

I agree it’s a subjective thing. For the ct in particular, trying to quanify or discredit the wing it is a moot point. Personally the whole car is boy-racer as earlycat had posted earlier.

I posted this a few years ago.... no indication where the wing was installed, just that it was ordered as a factory option.....

Interesting. Mine is a 1980, chassis 1121240. Delivered January 1980, ordered early 79. Completely different wing design.

it is a piemontese dialect word, not modenese, but the meaning is more or less what you wrote :)

if i had to guess from your tifoso nick name, i think you are a ferrari-guy more than a lamborghini-guy

and i have to say what you said in this post is totally in line with most ferrari guys think about old lamborghinis: miura is beautiful and countach is "too much"

while you will find most lamborghini guys more in love with the countach than with the holy miura

I rode in my friends fi 88 1/2 last night(to Hooters lol) his car is extremely smooth, quiet,(mine is loud) almost electric car smooth, anyway, beeing a 881/2 and side skirted,he kept the wing on, and beeing such a model, the wing actually is kinda acceptable,my verdict is to wear a wing, you must have sideskirts, kinda like wearing a wigg, you must have sideburns,to offsett the whole thing.

  20. What your saying is what the Ferrari guys say about driving any Lamborghini. You forgot the silk shirt & gold chains. To each his own, the wing was something I looked for when shopping , more than the variant. Probably goes back to that 6' poster I had in my fraternity room. I took a room about 12'x12' and built a second floor about 4' up. The bed was under, a couch on top with that poster. Good times, I was conditioned I guess...

I recently located another poster like the one I had (similar pic below). I'm trying to get it framed or? and put it in my home office. No second floor this time, but I did squeeze my old Ducati in there. :)

I changed my vote today to no wing. Aside from the fact that the wingless look has been growing on me, more importantly, I’ve learned without qualification that Countach’s were never actually fitted with wings at the factory (which is a critical standard for me). Given that wings were installed after factory assembly by a third party, I personally don’t consider that factory original.

I have been saying this for decades, fortunately you have been introduced to someone who testimony in writing on this subject is pretty much indisputable.

  23. Still a factory option, just laws in place that did not allow the installation at the factory.

The good news is that with wing corrosion many won't have to fret about a choice.

The survey presents a conundrum. What it tells me is that "sometimes," reasonably equates to half the time. Therefore, the wings dominate the no-wings (currently 45 to 34) at least half the time. The other half of the time, the no-wings have it their way (54 to 25). Overall, that means the no-wings have a stronger showing, but if the survey were to not include the "sometimes" option, we might see a purer result. A survey that asks, what car would you buy knowing you couldn't change it would force the choice.

What be might even purer, would be to pole non-believers -- non-car people as to what looks better for the car. The other problem in this mix is the wing itself. The higher, narrower QV wing is quite different than the lower, wider older wing. This creates a different look and we can't know what look is in which people's heads. A lot of people don't even know that there are two different wings and are already mentally committed to only one vision.
