I think most 80's car, like the 308, used lacquer based dyes, AFAIK. Probably the 328 as well. I know what you mean about new car. Like my 07 Boxster had "partial" leather. But it wore like iron.

The place doing mine uses a dye that is a pigment based, opaque dye. It is not an transparent, aniline dye. I read the benefits of Pigmented leather (Corrected Grain Leather) are it is much more durable than Aniline leather and it doesn’t fade. The many common uses for it include: varsity jackets, children’s furniture, upholstery and car interior upholstery. The top coat is applied after the dye is sprayed and dried which is what gives the color it's durability.

Photos of 1967 Ferrari seat redye the shop doing mine did. For reference my current seats have some crappy "dye" that peels like skin. The leather under it is very good. I'll post pics before and after when I get them back.

    OP seats are VERY fixable.

Those '67 seats are typical of what happens to a lacquer based dye. It

It sounds like your seats have been re-dyed before.

Yes John mine were done needlessly and the "dye" peels like latex after cleaning them. So I am sending to the guys who did the seats above to redo them. The match the OEM leather exactly with dye not just use what ever bottles are on the shelf.

OP Scott, when you do whatever you do to solve it, can you post the results and what was done? Others may benefit from it its not uncommon.

Yes, I will be looking for a leather shop in the N. VA area. Thus far the places I have found don't look encouraging, mostly mobile services that are clearly doing quick fixes.

So what is proper bolster seat repair? Better yet, who in Socal does it? I prefer to send it out to a “professional” than DIY.

Every 355 has bolster seat wear. Why is this thread only 4 pages long?

Nope. Not going to be laughed at. :)

But 7 years later and .....

I will say that part of it lasting is that I get into the car correctly. Butt first. I see a lot of people put their right leg in first, then slide down the bolster.

Did you rub acetone on the leather and spread the coloring?

No, but I did use acetone to clean the leather and remove some of the old dye. Then I scuffed the surface with 400 or 600 grid and applied the dye I concocted. I actually did the entire seat because it was where it wasn't worn it was still discolored. I did not use any of the conventional dyes or associated products, but I would imagine they would work fine.

Yea, I’m definitely taking this to someone who knows what he’s doing :p.

Pros will likely spray it and then all your stitching will be the same color as the leather. :(
