Looking for some direction on a small transmission oil leak. The oil is weeping from the small plug on the front of the trans. See photo (plug is on the lower left side, with a small drop of oil on it). It leaks about 5 drops a week. My question is can I remove and clean this plug to stop the leak? My guess is the leak is not from the plug, but it makes its way there. You would be surprised how oil travels. Likely its the backplate... I see some residual there...
Ok, just checked the plug. Yes, the trans oil is weeping out the plug threads. No other signs of oil from anywhere else. I can wipe the plug clean, then wait and the oil reappears. Also the Allen head thread is stripped round. I tried to tighten the plug bit no results. Can I just get a new plug and replace this one? Or is this plug holding something in the transmission in place? LJS
Your saying plug but I don't see oil in your picture around the plug. Do you mean this plug? Yes but new one with new crush washer and put it in. https://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/threads/pap348-gearbox-oil-change.101885/
Looks to be on the Intermediate Plate, and possibly Item #44 https://www.ricambiamerica.com/car-diagrams/ferrari/v6-v8/348-group/348/gearbox-differential-housing-and-intermediate-casing.html Image Unavailable, Please Login
No, it's not the drain plug. I just changed the trans oil then noticed the leak it's from the small plug at the front bottom of the casting. Review first photo. Thanks for you input. LJS
I'm no expert but if its the bolt Wade posted try torquing then all, but I suspect if its that bolt its probably gasket issue and oil by passing and working it way out the bolt hole. Not sure a new bolt will do anything different. I hope I'm wrong of course. Dig into parts diagrams different ones will have different angles. Should reveal some answers to what it is. May be a simple fix.
Yes, that's the plug (10269550 PLUG). Can this plug just be removed and replaced with a new one? Will the Trans oil pour out? LJS
Since it's already "stripped round" seems that someone made previous attempts to tighten it (or stripped when trying to remove). Hopefully someone here will add from their experience - plug removal. From the parts book, there doesn't appear to be any spring-loaded surprises within.
New territory for me so I don't know. Never seen or heard of anyone pulling this plug before either (not that it hasn't been done, of course).
I think in the diagram for oil pump and what not it shows that plug. I believe I remember seeing it when I was having all my tensioners updated as the pan had to be dropped and I was buying all the replacement rings and what not.
Thanks everyone for your direction and help. I was able to use an easy-out to loosen then tighten the plug about 1/2 turn in. Hope this works to stop the leak, if not, I'll replace it with a new one. LJS Image Unavailable, Please Login
